For me, this is actually the major flaw within the concept of “white privilege”. By making it solely about “unearned privilege” instead of the violence of white supremacy, it enables white people to continue to not implicate themselves within the schema of white racial terrorism. https://twitter.com/docrussjackson/status/1218101791369441281
“Privilege” reduces/individualises racism, emphasising that to be white is merely to be privileged, as opposed to a system that white people *actively* participate in as a means of world-making and to position those racialised outside its boundaries in close proximity to death.
Attention is then drawn towards individualistic, small-scale and performative modes of “checking one’s privilege” rather than reckoning with how the possibility of being white in this world is crystallised by making the lives of those racialised as non-white completely impossible
Reckoning with the expansiveness, intricacies, realities and brutality of white supremacy and then seeking to dismantle it is a completely different project than the liberalised zone in which “white privilege” discourse is being staged.
