Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Mason Greenwood and Erling Braut Haaland (THREAD)
I will start this thread by saying that I followed the situation very closely when Haaland was at Molde FK, and these are not only stats that I am looking up from the past.
Whether fair or unfair, Solskjær (OGS) is often criticised for his lack of tactical acumen. This can be left for another debate. However, one thing I think he does not get enough credit for, is his ability to develop players. Recently, quotes from Jamie Carragher have appeared -
in which he praises Klopps ability to develop players & not only purchase world class players. I personally think OGS also has a fantastic ability to develop players. If we look at United´s squad from this year, I would argue there are a lot of players who have taken big steps -
under OGS. James (championship player), Williams (youth player), Andreas (never had a long run in the team), McTominay (nearly undroppable now), Rashford (more goals then any other season), Fred (from bench to full time starter).Which brings me to the topic - Greenwood + Haaland.
OGS can recognise & develop talent. Haaland was brought to Molde FK as a 16 year old by OGS. In his first season in the club, he was not even a part of the league squad the first 10 matches, despite starting and scoring the Norwegian cup early in the season.
His first appearance in the league squad was as an unused sub. The next match he was also a sub, and came on after 19 minutes. Over the 2nd half of the season (15 matches) he proceeded to start 3 matches, come on as a sub in 8 matches, and not make the squad in 4 matches.
He finished his first season as a professional in Molde FK starting 5 total matches, and coming on as a sub in 15 matches. Scoring 4 goals and 1 assist. He also appeared in the UEFA Youth League for Molde U19, as well as helping the U19 team win the Norwegian U19 cup that year.
In his 2nd season in Molde FK things really developed quickly for him. After starting the first 4 matches of the season on the bench, he went on start 17 of the last 26 league matches and finished the season as the 3rd leading scorer in the league with 12 goals.
Starting 17 matches and coming on as a sub 8 times. 2 times he was an unused sub, and 3 times not in the squad.
What does this have to do with Greenwood? Both Greenwood and Haaland are 2 of the most exciting attacking talents in world football. Each of them are considered to be strikers, and each of them have been managed by OGS as teenagers in their first full seasons as professionals.
Many supporters have been calling for more minutes for Greenwood this season, and this of course with good reason. He has scored 9 goals in all competitions and has put in some fantastic performances. OGS has recently been quoted as saying -
"Let the boy settle first before we talk about England and the Euros. His focus has to be on playing more for us, improving and when he plays more for us that will happen by itself." OGS knows what he is talking about. After 2 professional seasons under his belt, Haaland is now
a full international for Norway. Greenwood has been slowly brought along this season at United, having started 11 matches for the first team, subbing on 15 times, and being and unused sub 5 times. He has also played 2 matches for the reserves, scoring 2 goals.
While the players themselves, Greenwood and Haaland in this case, will always deserve the most credit for their development, OGS has had a huge part in both of their young careers. I feel he has done a near perfect job bringing Greenwood into the first team and deserves a lot -
of credit for his development. It is very important things are not rushed to fast with players at the level and age, and OGS knows exactly what he is doing, as he has done perfectly one time before. #MUFC #OGS #Greenwood #Haaland
