Robert II married Bertha of Burgundy while being godfather to one of her children from a former marriage. This made their union incestuous. Pope Gregory V excommunicated the king. Jean-Paul Laurens portrays the couple in dramatic isolation to condemn the fanaticism of the church.
Puvis de Chavannes was a specialist in monumental painting. His flat technique, without shadows or reliefs, in clear tints matched stone of the wall surfaces on which he usually worked. Younger artists like Seurat and Maillol were inspired by him.
