the “disinformation” part of the e2e encryption “abuse” discourse has some deeply dystopian doublespeak
the basic assumption is that people cannot be trusted to have encrypted communications without there being a higher authority to ensure they’re only communicating “correct” information or opinions
and invariably the examples used to support this position are taken from information environments like Facebook and Twitter which actively deprive their users of agency over the information they receive, by, e.g., algorithmic timelines and preventing third-party clients
so you have a situation in which large, authoritarian technology structures create masses of information-impoverished people, and this is in turn used to justify even more technocratic information controls
another tell for the basic insincerity of this position is that “disinformation detection” is focused on encrypted communications and not on, e.g., Fox News, which has been broadcasting lies for nearly 30 years now.
and similarly for “deepfakes”, which basically serves as a distraction from outright lies. so you have “disinformation” people talking about how FB’s “deepfakes” policy is a step forward while ignoring the fact that FB installed Breitbart as a fact checker
