Week 1 for #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM: Intros, Syllabus on Monday. Today dove into readings. Dana's (1917) "Gloom of the Museum", Low's (1942) "What is a Museum?", and discussed barriers to museum attendance and debated whether educators or curators (or both) should create exhibits 1/4
Buffington's (2017) "Six Themes in the History of Art Education", and William's (2007) "A Summary of U.S. Museum Policy from 1960 to the Present". Discussed merits of working w/ teachers, and the public alienation of museums, described in @AAMers Excellence & Equity. #MSU_LIM 2/4
We also discussed the 1893 World's Fair (where "primitive" people were exhibited) and how the Fair became @FieldMuseum and showed @nikhiltri's 2015 MCN Ignite on Towards an Anti-Oppression Museum Manifesto (still relevant, probably evergreen) #MSU_LIM 3/4
Starting this way to set the tone for considerations that museum educators should be thinking about in the creation of exhibitions and programs. Looking forward to next week: The 5W's and 1H of museum educators: Who, What, When, Where, Why, How. #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 4/4
Week 2: Readings on 5W's and 1H of museum educators. "Professional Standards for Museum Educators" ('92) by Patterson Williams & “Qualifications and the Professional Preparation and Development of Art Museum Educators" ('05) by David Ebitz. #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 1/7
We discussed the (ridiculous?) lists of "requirements" for museum educators. Seems like those are the expectations that are often required of entry level museum educators, yet they are not entry level activities. #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 2/7
Also took a look at @MuseumHack as a model of for-profit 3rd party educators. What's good about that? What's questionable? Discussed Hein's ('06) "Museum Education" focusing on Dewey. #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 4/7
Ultimately arriving at the intro to "Periphery to Center" ('07) by Burnham & Kai-Kee "Museum Education and the Project of Interpretation in the Twenty- First Century” discussing why educators should be moved from periphery to center of museum operations, should they? #MSU_LIM 5/7
On Wednesday, discussed why we're doing this on Twitter (connecting to #museumed #musetech & #musesocial sectors) and watched @wrdodger's 2017 (regrettably evergreen) MCN Ignite "I Am Not a Social Media Guru" #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 6/7
Also, I showed a list of handles from #museumed, #musetech, and #musesocial that people can start following, so look out for new followers, museum peeps! #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 7/7
Week 3: Had no class Monday due to MLK holiday, but met today to discuss Understanding Audiences: Who visits and why? Readings: "Museums & Society 2034: Trends and Potential Futures" from Center for the Future of Museums (2008). #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 1/7
That tells us we (still) have a lot of work to do to be places "of cultural exchange" as it says museums "won't have any other choice." It's 2020, are we getting anywhere with this? #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 2/7
Also discussed Mary Ellen Flannery's (2010) "Brainstorm: Inside the Mind of the Visitor" who contends museums should be providing multi-sensory experiences and emotional connections. How do you do that in art or science museums, zoos & aquariums, etc? #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 3/7
1st discusses negative substitution (for every 1000 lost, only 948 new high propensity visitors), and the MAPS Framework for gaining audiences. 2nd: how millenials come back sooner, spread positive WOM, reach more people, have highest lifetime value. #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 5/7
And discussed John Falks (2009) Visitor Identity Model. Do you go to museums to see everything (explorer), lead others (facilitator), see a destination (experience seeker), see something specific (professional/hobbyist) or to be rejuvenated (rechargers)? #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 6/7
We finally went over the Clifton Strengths program (all students took assessment), and showed how most of the themes of the class occur in the Relationship Building and Strategic Thinking theme domains. Will be discussing more during the semester! #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 7/7
Week 4 (last week) Learning Theory and Styles: We read/discussed (thanks to discussion leaders @cdanforthc and @sonata_matisse!) Grinder & McCoy's (1985) "How People Learn", Hein & Alexanders (1998) "Educational Theory" 1/4 #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM
Dierking's (1991) "Learning Theory and Learning Styles: an Overview", Smiths" (1996) "David A. Kolb on Experiential Learning, Schaller, et. al's (2007) "One Size Does Not Fit All: Learning Style, Play, and Online Interactives" https://bit.ly/2SiF3BF  2/4 #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM
Finally @TheArtRopeik's (2018) "It’s Time to Listen: This Guggenheim Project Showed the Importance of Lending an Ear” https://bit.ly/2RTQe4y . Wednesday, we had an awesome zoom visit from @Jennifer_Foley re: how the Albright Knox Gallery sees learning. 4/4 #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM

Finally, Csikszentmihályi & Hermanson's (1999) “Intrinsic Motivation in Museums: Why Does One Want to Learn?”, then Wednesday visited Nick Vanacker & Elesha Newberry @MSUMuseum to discuss the museum's approach to education. #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 3/4
Class went into the galleries to try to design flow experiences of Csikszentmihályi. Those that 1) have clear goals 2) match visitor's abilities 3) have increasing levels of difficulty 4) provide unambiguous feedback. Do your #museums have any? #musetech #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 4/4
Week 7: @Jewelz_24 and I led discussion about Object-Based, Inquiry-Based, and Dialogic-Based Teaching. We've been discussing VTS already in the course, Housen and Yenawine's "Basic VTS at a Glance" http://bit.ly/3bPpMkF  was helpful for an activity! #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 1/7
Also, discussed Caston's (1989) “A Model for Teaching in a Museum Setting" that urges #museumed to have a philosopy of museum learning, providing a diagram considering the Museum Component, Education Component, and Subject Area Component. #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 2/7
Then, Williams' (1984) “Object Contemplation: Theory into Practice” that posits 4 mental activities in contemplation of an object: 1) Looking, 2) Reacting, 3) Consider Cultural Context, 4) Judging Art. Does that happen sequentially? #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 3/7
Followed up with Stapp's (1984) "Defining Museum Literacy" - Should people learn how to "museum?" Are we asking too much? Then, Shuh's (1982) "Teaching Yourself to Teach With Objects". #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 4/7
I challenged the notion that objects teach, in claiming the logical end of constructivism is that objects have no meaning apart from what we, as humans, ascribe to them. Might have been a bridge too far for some? #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 5/7
Finished off talking about Bloom's Taxonomy, and showed @Jewelz_24's reinterpretation of the model. Is that better, or a networked model? Or something else? #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 6/7
Today we went over the rubric for their final projects - plan for an exhibition or a series of programs in a museum of their choosing! #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM Next week #a11y Learning in Museums! 7/7
Week 8: Accessible Learning in Museums. @AmeliasLibrary and @museum_maggie led discussion about #a11y! Covered the Art Beyond Sight Handbook 4 Museum Educators http://bit.ly/2TsSQWZ  #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM 1/4

Today is the first day of final presentations, Groups 1 and 2 for #MSU_LIM will present! I'll live tweet the presentations in the following part of the thread! @spartanACMMS So follow the thread below!
Group 1: @NatalieEGentry @sonata_matisse @RobertMmsu and @EmMicha154 presenting a plan for the Climate Change: Find Your Footprint exhibition @Impression5! Quite the challenge to get children to engage with climate change! #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Planning to have that exhibition in the Dart Hall space. Target audience, Grades K-5. Citing @cdilly article about School Groups vs. Family exhibits. Schedule (pending COVID-19 decisions) Install Aug. 2020 late summer opening, closing Feb 2021. #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Experience Goals, Cognitive Goals, and Affect Goals aligned to Flannery's (2010) ideas about Multi-Sensory Learning. Like the affect goal of wanting the desire for a call to action (though that can be quite an ambitious goal!). #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Exhibit will include 3 - 4 touchable globes that emit warm temperatures at different times, with examples of ice caps melting. A space about erosion where visitors can manipulate lake level in a table that includes a house on a hillside. #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Includes an acid rain demonstration using diluted acetone that will melt styrofoam statues, and a recycling match game where sensors confirm with green recycle sign or red stop sign if you put the right/wrong item in the right place. #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Lastly, a carbon footprint interactive touchscreen calculator. Mulitple choice questions with emoji feedback. Aligns to flow experiences. Dart Hall a good accessible location to entrances, including student entrances. #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS See the diagram of exhibit!:
Tech needs: power and computer (raspberry pi?) for globes, heating element for each. Water hookup for erosion table. Pump for diluted acetone. Another raspberry pi for recycling match game (could even use arduino for that). #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
All exhibitions @Impression5 are created onsite, so all would be fabricated in house. Evaluation plan looking at that call to action, among other goals, using pre-post exhibit survey, door counter, participant observation, interview 1-2 weeks after visit for teachers. #MSU_LIM
Collecting data on high traffic days. Marketing as fun (not scary) and educational experience. Challenge to make this a fun experience when the content can be difficult. Vehicles: Web, FB, mailers, flyers. #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Budgeted based on 990 info, did some math, square footage, budget exceeds $2.8 million! Might be cheaper, considering in-house fabrication, but that number is not necessarily surprising to me. #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Group 2: @AmeliasLibrary @KnappZera @wakulskE24 & @MuseumBen designing suite of programs of making events @DIADetroit! Citing PFE's from @cdilly and Flannery's (2010) Multi-Sensory Experiences. Program 1, Teen Maker nights, that create a cohort of teen teachers. #MSU_LIM
Program 2: Fresco painting in the Diego Rivera Court. Also targeted to teens. Actually making Fresco paintings! Program 3: "Internal Fascination" about art, science, conservation, and art history. Targets: Teens, lovers of science, lovers of history, DIA members. #MSU_LIM
Program 3: uses Bruegel's "The Wedding Dance Revealed" to explore the aforementioned themes through creating backstories and fill out mock paintings. Program 4: Family and Children Pop Art Activity. Exploring history of pop art, with an activity of creating their own. #MSU_LIM
Evaluation plan includes following methods: Program 1: Interviews, Behavior Sampling. Program 2: Email surveys, hashtag tracking through social media. Program 3: Email surveys, hashtag tracking, onsite interviews. Program 4: Post experience survey, Behavior Sampling. #MSU_LIM
Marketing plan includes the following vehicles. Flyers, Social Media posts, targeted online newspaper ads, event listing on website, posters, banners, membership literature, email lists, museum signage, school newsletters/flyers. #MSU_LIM
Groups 3 & 4 present on Wednesday! #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Group 3 today presenting a MOTOWN exhibition with accompanying events @DIADetroit! #MSU_LIM @SpartanACM
One of the exhibition goals is to instill pride in the fact that the sound that originated from Detroit had global impact. The exhibition will include costumes and artifacts frrom Motown artists, and there will be a summer street concert series #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Evaluation will include Pre and Post Exhibit surveys, and social media tracking through a hashtag. Marketing will goals include increasing traffic, get local support, target young audiences, all through engaging material in exhibit and concert series #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Presentation included showing DIA "Gotta Have Art" TV ad from 1976 (hilarious), updating it to "Gotta Have Music". Also marketing through online targeted ads, and social media. #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Group 4 proposing an Impressionism stories Exhibition @DIADetroit. Targeting Millienial young families, and students K-Higher Ed. Experience Goals include engaging with art through observation, but also through interactive touchscreen experience. #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Affect Goals include being relaxed, comfortable, reflective. Exhibition will include music in headphones from contemporary periods to the art presented, and an experience where people can paint their own stories through the digital touchscreen. #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Presentation includes plans for collaboration across the organization (with Marketing, PR, Fundraising, Curatorial, Education, Evaluation), and with visitors. #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Evaluation to include post experience surveys, behavior sampling (gallery guide observation), and hashtag tracking. Also collecting zip codes when buying tickets. Marketing the unique experience of not just art, but stories. #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Marketing vehicles: Social Media, Website Ads, Email Marketing, Radio Ads, Bus Wraps. Group initially wanted to wrap school buses, but found that cost prohibitive, so planned for charter buses. #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Great job everyone! Meant to tag the presenters! Group 3: @zachMSU @museum_maggie @HicksMSU @ARhoadesMUSE , and Group 4: @cdanforthc @Jewelz_24 @MUSMDale @Benjami60139202 #MSU_LIM @spartanACMMS
Aaaaaand that's a wrap for #MSU_LIM for Spring 2020! It's been a wonderful class, and I'm proud of what the students accomplished and super excited to see where these student's careers go! @spartanACMMS
