as a non asian non white woman writing for/about Asian media, before i set out to write anything i spent many many hours studying the source material and most importantly, the culture and traditions. I had no one i could ask questions to bc the fandom was dead at that point
I was nervous about possibly getting anything wrong, and was relieved that i had managed to capture the essence of the source material and avoided any pitfalls. Regardless, non asian writers, gay or not etc, need to enter fandoms dealing with a culture they're not familiar with
with some humbleness, and an open mind, understanding they will make mistakes, but the willingness to open your minds and hearts to being corrected and learning new knowledge will make all the difference.
its not sea/asians job to hold my hand and baby me. Put some effort, do the research, reach out to those willing to pick your fic for accuracy or insensitive material. From what i know, ESL writers for eng fandoms do this for their fic when they join western fandoms.
Pay asian media based fandoms the same respect you do western ones, be you a writer or a diff type of content creator, and respect asian fans when they speak out bc they obviously know more than you. Its that simple.
This is not "policing or gatekeeping" fandom or whatever, this is being respectful, and having common courtesy. No one is saying you can't jump in the pool, just be mindful not to shove or push anyone when you get in. And remember to take off your shoes first.
Also take it as a learning experience? Learning about different cultures and countries is wonderful. It expands your horizons. I finished my education in the states and they teach you with the idea that the usa is the center of the universe, with nary a thought to anyone else. F!
