ok here's something i've been thinking about. awkwafina mentioned that she had a blaccent because that's just how people around her growing up spoke. but she now has a show coming out about a fictionalized version of her growing up and... none of the characters are black.
i mean, we've known for a while she was making it up. where did any of it go in the farewell? it was a good movie, but it shows that's not how she normally speaks. she also plays it up in crazy rich asians to a point where it's beyond ridiculous. it's not code switching.
it's so clear in some of her work that she just wants to play the black character without being black, and now that she has her own show, none of the main or recurring cast are actually black, so that goes to show where she actually stands in all this.
gotta add one more thing just to clarify. even if she did grow up around black people, (1) that still doesn't give her the right to use a blaccent, and (2) just because someone is black doesn't mean they have a blaccent, so either way, she's messy.
these tweets really blew up & i don't want to promote my own stuff (honestly all i do is tweet & i could do more/better), so i want to take this moment to amplify the work that @moms4housing is doing right now in oakland. support them & their fight!! https://twitter.com/moms4housing/status/1209185293825277952?s=20
