ok here’s a thread on aave. (African American Vernacular English).
first thing. A LOT of people believe that aave is just slang and certain words that originated in “urban” areas aka the hood. And although it’s a large part of it, there’s so many other attributes that make up aave.
- Slang

this is probably the biggest and most used parts of aave and I know that people will pick up on what they hear someone else say and it circulates, because that’s just how that works. But some terms were originated solely for purposes of making young black youths feel-
comfortable. Especially lgbtq black youths. “Period” “slay” “wig” we’re all created by black trans/ drag queens to uplift their community. This eventually reached white members of the lgbtq community and it then that reached everyone else.
- Slang 2

Now terms that were adopted by non blacks and whites that come directly from the hood are used even more. “Deadass, fo sho, fire, slaps, smacks, on god, is you serious” I’d be here forever if I put in every single example of adapted street slang.
Now the biggest issue with this is the mockery of black people and parts of our culture being added to the “stolen” language. Things that aren’t even a part of aave, just simply black American culture got mixed in with it. THIS is where the issue lies.
White people just started making fake personas and characters that were nothing more than a mockery of real black people for entertainment.
- Mannerisms, Dance, & Gesturing

Back to safe spaces for the black lgbtq community significantly decreased since the 80s and everything that made black trans women feel special, confident, and beautiful are now jokes and memes. As well as infiltrated by non-blacks.
If you want examples aave abuse turn to the biggest social media platform right now. Tik tok. Tik tok is a PRIME example of discredited, and disrespected black creators at the hands of over hyped, racist, and unfunny white copycats.
Tik tok has an entire house called the hype house with ZERO black people in it and yet everyone in there is famous for using black audios and dances. It’s just so funny to me.
Just in case this question needs to be answered
One more point on dance

Dancing & twerking etc goes so far into the culture and aave it deserves its own thread. But to put it simply, it’s basically cousins with culture appropriation when it comes to this. Fort nite, social media, white musicians, this list goes on.
That concludes this thread. There is so much more information and the damages against aave that I couldn’t include in this thread. It’s up to YOU to do the research and educate yourself.
