Happy 2020. Let’s see if I manage to do a thread this year with a piece of art I liked per day, not by me. Instagram links where available.
Starting with this @damnthedesign piece (you can see it on instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B6tFLxPA90l/?igshid=1wd7l36d64lhd )
And a second one since I’m already a day behind. This piece is by Graham Yarrington and you can find him on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B6Zw1V8jlAV/?igshid=tolnogjwwcx3
Sculpture made of bread by Matteo Lucca. You can find him on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B52C3OrI73F/?igshid=1wkh1qtmo5ylj
I saw this gorgeous Doron Langberg painting in 2019 at Yossi Milo gallery. More of Langberg’s work here: https://instagram.com/doronlangberg?igshid=87ixopjv6q7x
Today I’ve got two images by @printingberrie (follow her on Instagram by clicking this link: https://instagram.com/berriestephanie?igshid=egtrvpoaj3by )
Justin Daashuur Hopkins is a multimedia artist who also spearheads the Noh / Wave collective in LA. I’m not sure there’s an artistic medium he doesn’t have total command over (though I’m partial to his drawings). Find him on Instagram here: https://instagram.com/justindaashuurhopkins?igshid=afa8digasnhp
João Ruas (maybe better known as feral_kid on Instagram). More of their work here: https://instagram.com/feral_kid?igshid=1ejj0cehxx4kx
Hope Gangloff, perennial favorite. She's on Instagram at @hopeloff (and I guess on Twitter?). Make every effort you can to see her stuff in person. There's a luminosity and depth to it that you definitely can't get from photographs of her work.
Adrian Cox is fucking incredible and has a show coming up at Corey Helford in LA. Again, photos don’t really do the colors in these pieces justice.
Bruno Pontiroli never fails to crack me up. On Instagram here: https://instagram.com/brunopontiroli?igshid=wkd1wdt1dxqm image via @wowbywow (and I forgot to add Adrian Cox’s Instagram yesterday. You can find more of his work here: https://instagram.com/adriancoxart?igshid=1xhsprq6bonox )
Kinda obsessed with Anna Park’s frenzied drawings. You can find more of them on Instagram here: https://instagram.com/annaparkart?igshid=tounmquggv6
Weird, lumpy fleshblobs are sort of an easy win with me. This is by Dos Diablos, and you can find more of their work on Instagram here: https://instagram.com/dosdiablosdos?igshid=1zbfkmpbuy27
Jenny Morgan. Again, one of my longtime favorites. On Instagram here: https://instagram.com/jenny_morgan_jm?igshid=ii4di5y87bl8
I love pre-abstraction Mondrian. These treeeeeees, man. Those colors!
New to me: Elena Steiner! Came across her work this morning. You can find more of it here: https://instagram.com/steiner.elena?igshid=hgy5et1q7t79
Ana Mendieta, and I am picking three because it’s impossible for me to pick only one.
Sally Mann. Also: physically cannot pick just one photo of hers. The documentary about her is one of my favorite movies at this point.
Kiko Capile, on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/kikocapile/
Thinking about the art we have on our walls. Here’s a piece by Brandon Geurts that lives on my wall. You can (and should!) follow his work here: https://instagram.com/brandon_geurts?igshid=jxsd3ii2i8vb
Jane Windsor is a collage & cut paper artist I found because of Instagram and her work is really lovely. You can follow her on Instagram here: https://instagram.com/venomous_swan?igshid=ycb7lhye93da
Lucian Freud sketch of Francis Bacon (both obvious faves)
Käthe Kollwitz
Saw Wozzeck at the Met so here are some of William Kentridge’s drawings for Wozzeck.
Ellie Jo Gill is an illustrator and tattoo artist (who needs to be hired to illustrate a large fairy tale collection at some point, holy crap) working in RVA, but a fellow Masshole by birth
Walton Ford. I've seen one of these in person and holy crap these photos are inadequate. The pieces are HUGE and really just stunning and fuck the Twitter preview thing here, you gotta click for the full image of each piece.
Ivan Albright (!!!!!!!!)
Pat Perry. On Instagram as heypatyeah and is really just amazingly gifted and extremely hard-working. His sketchbook pages are also breathtaking. https://instagram.com/heypatyeah?igshid=19383jf7fhi46
Jenny Saville. Technically on Instagram but I’m not sure if it’s her, an agent, or just a fan account. Her work is LARGE and she’s one of my favorite working artists: https://instagram.com/jennysaville?igshid=13g06p71mkac0
Tessa Greene O'Brien, based in Maine, does lovely, vibrant things with architecture and interiors. On Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/tessagreeneobrien/
I finished the book I was reading yesterday and was feeling super indecisive when I left the house this morning so I have six books in my backpack. Two of them are comics from Jesse Jacobs. On insta here: https://instagram.com/jacobs_comics?igshid=7kbezo0ky66r
. @elivalley’s cartoons are brutal and incisive, and that’s obviously really important! But also oh my god his brushwork and the way he renders flesh/volumes is just SO so beautiful AND gross. He’s also on Instagram here: https://instagram.com/elivalley?igshid=k1hi1tw25ejg
Diane Victor. Draftsperson and printmaker. She also does drawings in ash and smoke! On Instagram at https://instagram.com/diane.victor?igshid=1rgt6643kzypw
Alan Brown, AKA Medusawolf, has an incredible vision. There’s a kinda joy and wonder in his work that I greatly admire. On Instagram here: https://instagram.com/_medusawolf_?igshid=73cybbt7r2m1
Tim Kent! I really gotta see his stuff in person at some point. On Instagram here: https://instagram.com/timkentstudio
Esther Sarto. On Instagram here: https://instagram.com/esther_sarto  and there’s something very quiet but still very violent about these pieces for me and I find the effect she gets is impressive as anything
Hayv Kahraman consistently blows me away. Her last show at @JackShainman got me a little choked up. She’s on Instagram here: https://instagram.com/hayvkahraman
On west coast time so I’m not late on this one. Here’s some Gregory Crewdson! I saw his work at the Getty today.
Cristina BanBan! I’ve been lucky to see her work in person and it’s so beautiful. On Instagram here: https://instagram.com/cristina_banban
I think she has work up at Fredericks & Freiser right now too!
Walked past a Lauren YS mural in Long Beach yesterday so here are some other murals of hers! The one I saw is the vertical with the teal background. She is on Instagram here: https://instagram.com/squid.licker
Junji Ito! Master of the improbably terrifying story. Spirals! Smells! Holes! So scary.
I’m on my phone so I think the image quality on this might be crap (I can’t narrow searches for larger images) but: Lalla Essaydi. Oh my goodness her work is so lush and beautiful, go find huge images of it. On Instagram here: https://instagram.com/lallaessaydi
This one is animation, so I've got a link + a bunch of stills: https://vimeo.com/197299050?ref=tw-share @benjybrooke is a kick ass animator, producer, jack of all trades. On Instagram at the same username.
Geoffrey Chadsey! He is also on Instagram (which I did not know until now! chads67). His stuff is SO FUCKING COOL in person! I saw a bunch of these faces he did at Art On Paper a couple years ago and unnnnffff so cool.
Jordan Casteel! Young, brilliant painter whose first NYC solo show opens at the New Museum on 2/19. On instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jordanmcasteel/
Saw @arti_brain last night and got the Infrared Horizon longsleeve, so here’s the work of Adam Burke, who is INSANELY prolific. On Instagram at https://instagram.com/nightjarillustration
MOEBIUS!
I’m tired and just remembered I forgot to do this until now so have some Andrew Wyeth and don’t fucking @ me, he was phenomenal
Anders Nilsen! He's a comic artist and illustrator and his work leaves me with some sort of expansive sad but pleasant feeling in my chest. On Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/andersbrekhus/
Shiri Mordechay's work is really, really difficult to capture in a photograph (it's super dimensional and really intricate), so I've also included a link to a video interview with the artist: https://vimeo.com/166632591

Mordechay is on instagram at http://instagram.com/shiri_mordechay
Ian Ingram! On Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/mysteryningram/  (a truly amazing Instagram account because he shows you a bunch of in-progress stages of his INSANE photorealistic stuff)
Benjamin Spiers! Totally new to me, saw him because Allison Sommers shared his newest piece on Instagram (which... holy shit!). One of these is a screenshot from Instagram because I can't figure out how to download a single image from a multi image post: https://www.instagram.com/p/B80tuRclau9/
Stephanie Hanes! Sculptor, ceramicist, new to me as of yesterday (found via Justin Dashuur-Hopkins). Four views here of the same completely bananas sculpture. On Instagram here: https://instagram.com/stephanie.hanes
Alice Neel. Feelin' lazy so here's a classic.
Paul Romano ( @workhardened) ! Crazy prolific album artist / graphic artist / painter / jack of all trades. On instagram at http://instagram.com/workhardened  (all these pieces have been used as album covers: @mastodonmusic, @WITHEREDMETAL, Starkweather, @daleknwk)
Toyin Ojih Odutola's work is INCREDIBLE but also definitely best experienced in person. There's a breathtaking subtlety to her mark-making. On instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/toyinojihodutola/ Pretty young, totally singular.
Diana Al-Hadid! She recently designed a mosaic inspired by the old arches of Penn Station near the entrance of the 1/2/3 lines in Penn Station (included below) and is on Instagram at http://Instagram.com/dianaalhadid
Ray Pettibon. If you’re following me there’s a good chance you already know about his work so you know how hard it was to pick just 4 pieces. On Instagram at http://Instagram.com/raydog669  and Twitter at @RaymondPettibon
Curtis Mann! Photographer. Doesn’t have an art Instagram.
I’m late so I’m making up for it with the fantastic work of Gregory Jacobson. On Instagram here: https://instagram.com/gregory_jacobsen
Jesse Shaw! These linoleum cut prints come from his series American Epic. Jesse is on Instagram here: https://instagram.com/americanprintmaker
I sort of started an Art On Paper theme yesterday with the Jesse Shaw stuff (it's where I first encountered his work) so let's keep it going with Erik Desmazières (not on Instagram)! Art on Paper is this week and it's my favorite art fair.
Art on Paper artists continue! Samantha Wall. I saw the gold piece on here last year at Art on Paper and it was really striking. She's on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/samanthawall/
SETH CLARK! Oh man these are a must see if you can catch them in person. Collaged paper & paint. The textures are unreal. Also first saw these at Art on Paper (in the @PARADIGMGS booth). On instagram at https://www.instagram.com/fragmentation/
Jason Chen is a photographer (and co-owner of @PARADIGMGS) whose woven photos are really & truly impressive. He'll have some collaborative work up in the Paradigm booth of this year's Art On Paper fair! Here's some of Jason's past work.
Roos Holleman! She has work at Art On Paper this year and these pastel drawings are (mostly) huge and (all) lovely. On Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/roosholleman/

(And Jason is on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/thatchinesekid/  and I forgot to include that yesterday SORRY JASON)
Will Kurtz! Also usually at Art On Paper (find the Bassett Hound if you get a chance to go this year) and I'm a fan of anyone who makes elaborate paper sculptures of dogs, so here are some of those dogs. (I'm not gonna post serious art all the time, sorry.)
Anita Groener. Last of the Art On Paper posts! She wasn't there this year but her cut paper installations are lovely, whimsical, and sometimes kind of disorienting.
Arcmanoro Niles! On Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/arcmanoro/  I really love the use of color in his pieces.
Sanam Khatibi! Totally new discovery for me. Found via @PPOWGallery. On Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/untilthelilacsturnblack/
Alex Eckman-Lawn ( @alexeckmanlawn) makes pretty singular cut paper collages and is also kind of the best but don't let him know I said nice things about him or his head will get so big it might explode. He is on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/alexeckmanlawn/
I kinda flubbed on posting yesterday so now I'mma do two in a row! Socially distancing yourself & looking for reading? Comic artist & writer Charles Burns draws beautiful, disturbing stuff. On instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/fictopicto/
Farel Dalrymple ( @fareldalrymple), also a comic artist & author! On Instagram (and Patreon!) at the username fareldal. Also good reading for while you're socially distancing yourself.
Julie Heffernan! I think she's on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/jheffernan7/
Monica Rohan! She's really wonderful and she's on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/monrohan/
Jeffrey Chong Wang paints gorgeously and his subjects are poignant, surreal, and satirical all at once. On Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jeffrey_chong_wang/
Haley Manchon is only 23 or 24 (WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK) and is already kicking serious ass. On Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/haley_manchon/
William Villalongo is another one of those artists whose work is really best experienced in person (which... is really hard to do right now, I know, I'm sorry!). Lots of textural elements, cut paper, flocking, etc. On Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/wvillalongo/
Stephen Wilson ( @unknownrelic) is one of the sweetest people I know and he makes some spooky artz. Pls follow this wonderful fellow on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/unknown_relic/  These are some of my favorite pieces of his.
Stephanie Syjuco is a really gifted conceptual artist who works across media and I strongly recommend watching her feature on @art21! She's on instagram at http://instagram.com/ssyjuco  (also organizing ways to get protective gear to medical professionals right now, link in reply)
