Starting off my 2020 game journal thread. 2020 is going to be crazy in a couple months, but I've still got a ton of 2019 games on my plate.
Starting off 2020 with Ring Fit! It's really a lot of fun and work. I definitely want to try and keep it up daily. I'm pretty pleased with how well the ring con works, and the asthetic of the game is great. Let's not forget the trailer #2020games
Credits roll on DQ11S, a second time through and this game is magic. The 2D mode makes a bigger difference than expected. Maps, vehicles, even combat are all tweaked. It was perfect for a second play. I can't skip this post game, so the quest continues!

EDF Iron Rain is another 2019 hold over I just got on sale. I waited on this one because EDF5 is so perfect. This one is...Ok? It's better than EDF:IA, but it just kinda feels off. Maybe it will grow on me. VO work is as nonsensical as I always want. #2020games
Finishing DQ11's post game I still can't get over how much I love this game. It's so rare that I beat a huge RPG twice, much less back to back. Honestly, I want to go right back in and play it again in 3D. The game is just pure magic. Luckily there's a little post post game.
Started chipping away at New Super Lucky's Tale. It's a cute little platformer. I wouldn't really say it's blowing me away, but it does what it needs to. I do really like the digging movement. It gives me a Bugs Bunny feel digging around and diving underground. #2020Games
NSLT was a fun little platformer. It's not the best one I've played, but it's not the worst. It was just about as long as it needed to be. Digging was still the most fun. #2020Games
Been siting on Battle Chasers for a while. I love Joe Mad's art and I'm digging the gameplay. Though I didn't realize that there was some loot grinder element to the game. Load times are the biggest knock against it so far #2020games
I picked up Super Robot Wars T again, and got the GaoGaiGar crew. Which led to re-watching GaoGaiGar. Which led building GaoGaiGar models. #2020games
Playing Mega Man Zero for the first time in 15 years, it still feels good. But wow does this game have the most bullshit lives system and lots of weird grindy and extra punishing systems I'd forgotten about. I'll always love this theme tho:
MMZ was a lot of fun to revisit, even if it has some incredibly bullshit systems and is not impressed by anything you do. Nothing you can do in this game will ever be good enough for it. On to MMZ2! https://twitter.com/GGJoefus/status/1237193345618702336?s=19
Picked up Anodyne on Switch for $1 yesterday. It's a game I'd been aware for a while, mainly due to it's GBC Zelda like style. It's a way weirder and surreal game than I was expecting. I'm enjoying it so far!
Rolled credits, there was a lot more weird than I was expecting. I think I need to process this game a bit or replay it, I have more questions than answers at the end. Overall I enjoyed it and there's some post game stuff, I'm going to see if that adds anymore answers.
After a week with ACNH I have some strongly mixed feelings on it. On the one hand it's cute as heck, and it's a lot of fun to just do what you want and hang out with people in a weird interactive chat room. On the other hand the single player experience is burn out city.
Tools that break just to force you to constantly use the crafting system. Endless mundane tasks that at best ask you to do something you were in going to do anyways and at worst ask you do things you don't want to or are just dumb (why is clothes changing a task?).
ACNH seems to have no natural stopping points like previous games. You reach the end of the day and there's really nothing else to do, but those dumb NookMile+ tasks are still there. So I grind mystery islands till I'm just burnt out and not happy.
Then the next day some friends come over and it's a great time.

I think my answer is to find some moderation in the game, and get over the compulsion to do everything the game is asking me to do.

That or start time traveling.
198X is a weird one. Visually and audibly gorgeous, it plays more likes a surreal interactive movie that ends just when it would be starting. It's only and hour or two and all the arcade games were really fun. I'd say I'm excited for what comes next
Saw the Power Rangers Battle for the Grid DLC was on sale so I decided to give it a try for the first time a year since I've heard it's been really improved. Too bad I'll never know since it crashed three times in a row trying to start an arcade match. Back to Animal Crossing.
I picked Dragon Marked For Death back up because there's new characters dropping at the end of the month. I forgot how much I really like this game and I should really finish it!
Beat DMFD, but got the bad ending. So I'll have to work on the other characters and side missions and get a better ending. I'm really surprised at how much I like this game. It kinda reminds me of like an old PS1 game, with lots of obscure secrets.
Just closing the book on ACNH, I'm starting Rune Factory 4. Already I'm having so much more fun.

You know why?

The tools don't break.

And the game doesn't feel like it was designed to waste as much of your time as possible with every action.
Finally started DOOM 2016. It's just good.
Wrapping up DOOM 2016. This game does a perfect job of making you feel like the thing demons are afraid of and have a solid difficulty. A mini map would have been nice to keep me out of the pause map so much. I'm excited to tackle Eternal in 4 years.
Been digging into Streets of Rage 4. Over all I like it: the characters are too slow, more than one character should be able to dash, the special system feels good, would like a block or dodge button, the music is great and the visuals are stunning.
Pick up this game the other week when it was on sale. I really like the arcade-y controls and the low-poly design. The game is a little repetitive, but it's fun in short bursts.
Streets of Rage 4 was a lot of fun. The key to it was unlocking Adam. Then everything started flowing for me. I also really like the continue system. And of course the music and visuals were excellent the whole time.
Oh somewhere in here I rolled credits on Rune Factory 4. But there's a ton of post game story stuff, so I'm not sure it counts. Either way, I'm still enjoying it and glad it got a Switch port.
Excited to finally start Darksiders Genisis. DS3, surprised me and got me hopeful for the series future. So far DSG is definitely a Darksiders game. That is to say: It's totally different than the last, it's got tons of flaws and jank, and I'm still having a blast with it.
Took a break this weekend to replay Mega Man Legends. This is one of the few games I go back to every couple years. It's impossible to talk about this game objectively, but this game has a lot of heart and game to back that heart up.
Darksiders was a good bit of fun, I liked that there was no gear grinding, and I liked seeing two horsemen actually interact for the first time. The ending was pretty unpleasant. It feels like what would normally be the bad ending.
One of two mobile games I've actually really enjoyed, Slayin got a sequel on Switch and I love it. A story mode with unlockable characters, secrets, weapons, and upgrades and some gorgeous pixel art. So far Slayin 2 is proving to be a fun little game!
Oh I forgot to start one of these for Trails of Mana remake. It's a weird remake in how much it feels like a SNES or PS2 JRPG. Which was fine with me. Some of the unique story structure comes off as incomplete but luckily there's a NG+ to try now
Wrapped on Zero 2. Interesting to compare to Z1. It's both easier and harder than the first game. The stages and bosses both have way more gimmicks to trip you up, but they tweaked the continue system and give you 2 SubTs. It's still an excellent game. https://twitter.com/GGJoefus/status/1270526988189446144?s=20
Oh I fell behind on these, I beat Zero 3 it's still good. Definitely the easiest of the 3. The story comes to head and they make some nice tweaks to they cyber elf system to allow you to use some without score penalty. Still it doesn't quite feel up to 1 and 2.
Been picking away at Jet Lancer which is so good and so awesome and so kicking my butt. I love how the Lancer handles and u-turns around enemy fighters to flank and out maneuver their missiles is really satisfying.
Pokemon Isle of Armor DLC is also good. A whole new wild area with lots of different environments. Actual forests and caves, it's easy for me to get lost and there's only one pokemon center on the island. So going out into the area feels kinda exciting.
Beat the story part of the Isle of Armor. I'm really happy with it! It refined concepts from the main game and made The Wild Area better. Having a new Pokedex to fill was good. Got a few side quests to wrap up, but I'm ready for Crown Tundra!
Velocity 2X is something I've wanted to play for a years. It reminds of Guardian Legend but with stages and teleportation puzzles. The controls kinda drive me bonkers when swapping styles. It's pretty clever, not sure I'll beat it since I need to grind scores to unlock levels.
I guess Dragon's Crown Pro technically goes on this list even though it's exactly the same as the regular version to the point it has crossplay with PS3. It's still great, and still has so many weird janky UX quirks that if it wasn't so unique I probably wouldn't put up with.
Started playing Panzer Paladin, and man it looks and sounds so good. It was kinda hard to start, but once I slowed down and started being more methodical with my play it got a lot easier. I guess kids would call it "souls-like" but I think "Zelda 2, but actually fun".
Also gotta fit this official Powerglove cover of the title them in this thread cause it's been knocking around my head constantly
