#DryJanuary people - I’ve been there for a while now - and there are actually some rather good alcohol free or 0.5% beers (ie: AF but not allowed to label it as such. )
Here’s my top 5 - all available from supermarkets. Sadly pubs aren’t up to scratch really. /1
1. They all have “cute” names for some reason but via Waitrose this is “Special Effects” - a great hoppy lager from Brooklyn. This is full of depth, colour and a bit of citrus. A winner ! /2
2.Infinite Sessions via Sainsbury’s do a few AF take offs and I really like this IPA. A decent colour, not thin and watery like some of those bland lagers (that’s you Heineken, Becks etc) and comes in cans so you can kid yourselves it’s a fancy craft beer. /3
3.Brewdog Nanny State - Via Waitrose and various supermarkets .Brewdog make a decent effort for their AF customers and the silly named citrus IPA Punk AF is lovely on draught in their pubs (v rare I’m afraid) but Nanny State is the original and best. Real depth - my normal go-to
4.A relatively new one - Lucky Saint - and a lager I first encountered in a Honest Burgers joint. Now in Sainsbury’s- it’s easily the best lager I’ve had so far. It’s streets ahead of the dreadful big brewery efforts. I had Budweiser Prohibition once and couldn’t finish it. /5
5. And finally - this is now in a few pubs thankfully - Adnams Ghost Ship is a glorious AF stab by (back in the day) my favourite brewery and it was one of their best ales. Again there’s a bit of lemon/orange in there, it tastes beery and it’s in Waitrose and elsewhere. /6
I drink less AF beer these days (I’ve been Alcohol free myself now for 18 months) enjoying tea and Coke Zero and Diet Lemonade just as much. But they’re great if you’ve that itch & a good transition drink in the early days.Still wish pubs would up their game. Universally poor. /7
