It's the first day of a new year, time for a new thread!

This year @FionaLMacIntyre and I will both be posting one word a day each, tagged #lingobingo

It'll be a word that has struck our fancy that day, primarily from English but also the other languages we speak
I will be consulting Word Web for any English words, will not promise to stick to British spelling or colloquialisms only though.

For words from other languages, I shall consult the great god Google, or those fluent dictionaries also known as family and friends #lingobingo
Inspired by something @kate_englefield said a while ago! #lingobingo https://twitter.com/anu_gram/status/1156562737251737601?s=19
For Jan 1, I'm leaning into my Indian roots and choosing 'Shubha' from Kannada ('shubh' in Hindi), as my word today. It means 'auspicious' and invoking auspiciousness at the start of anything new is a key part the culture I grew up with and in #lingobingo
Word today is 'Prosaic' because is there anything as commonplace as the 2nd day of Jan, or indeed, a Thursday?

"I never could get the hang of Thursdays" in the immortal words of the fictitious Arthur Dent

#lingobingo
As an aside, point of lingual curiosity is how prosaic and Prozac are so close to each other...as if the drug aims to bring about a state of prosaicness to those who experience anything but. It's comforting and somewhat amusing coincidence... hat tip worthy, perhaps? #lingobingo
Today's word is one I discovered thanks to my skincare obsession.

'Jeong' is a Korean concept, a rather complex one encompassing all that comes with building a deep and emotional connection with others, your environment and even objects #lingobingo
Apparently it's difficult to describe in Korean as well.

I discovered it in coveting @thenimetyou_'s products and branding and was struck by the beauty of the idea

May we all be blessed with jeong (정) aplenty in our lives #lingobingo
One of my favourite discoveries ever, today: 'floccinaucinihilipilification', the act/habit of deeming something worthless

Special also as then brand-new bf (now spouse) shared it on discovering I loved words

Per OED, it's the longest non-technical word in English #lingobingo
Is there any word that says Sunday more than 'Supine'? (well, er, other than Sunday itself)

Here's to getting as much repose as possible in preparation for the first full week back this year #lingobingo
I had a different word lined up for today but that was before I saw the new Star Wars last night... If I have to sit here with my feelings then so do you, so here's a one word review/opinion: 'preposterous' #lingobingo
I've discovered a new (to me) word! 'Mordacity': a tendency to bite

The man I married reliably informs me that in footie terms this is also called a Luis Suarez 😐 😁 😂

#lingobingo
The irony is that if it goes on for long enough, insomnia is 'Soporific'

I know I'm certainly feeling its eventual sleep inducing effects today after a particularly bad night

Never mind luftballons, there is some serious lead ballooning happening here now

#lingobingo
Today's word is a little Italian gem I learned yesterday, in reading a book being touted as a love letter to stories and storytelling.

'Sognatore', meaning dreamer

#lingobingo
Today's word is one from Sanskrit and I love its sound as much as its meaning.

'Kshama' (क्षमा)

I grew up thinking it meant forgiveness, but it encompasses forbearance, patience and endurance (along with forgiveness), shown or asked for in contrition #lingobingo
"... what is written is what is true. Words and their meanings have weight in the world of matter, shaping and reshaping realities through a most ancient alchemy." - The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow perfectly exposits how I feel re. words + why I do #lingobingo
On that note, word today is 'Koine'. A dialect of ancient Greek originally, it's come to mean 'a common language used by speakers of different languages', a.k.a lingua franca

For some of us, a love of words, language, stories and storytelling is koine enough

#lingobingo
I've hit upon a treasure trove of words thanks to re-discovering 'The Book of Human Emotions' in my reading pile. Words that describe emotions? My current favourite kind!

'Kaukokaipuu' (from Finnish): a longing and homesickness for a place you've never been to! #lingobingo
Another one from The Book of Human Emotions today

'Matutolypea': morning sorrow, or waking up overcome with misery and a bad temper

A word made for Mondays, if there ever was one

#lingobingo
Tuesdays, hey?

'Euchred' today for #lingobingo, meaning exhausted or at the end of one's tether. I'm feeling it is understating it
Word today is a contribution from sis, who has left this morning to return to India

'Decathect': to withdraw one's feelings of attachment from (a person, idea, or object), as in anticipation of a future loss

I, on the other hand, am indulging in denial

#lingobingo
Word today is from Urdu

'Leher': meaning wave, there is an elegance to the movement that suggests unfurling, graceful undulation and flourishes

A reminder of Life's peaks and troughs, but that there's beauty, grace and elegance in how it moves

#lingobingo
Today's word is 'Imponderabilia': things that cannot be precisely determined, measured, or evaluated

All the mysteries of Life, The Universe and Everything that shall remain mysteries... Except perhaps for knowing that the answer to the question of all that is 42 #lingobingo
For #lingobingo today, we have 'Rax': to stretch, as you do on waking up
#lingobingo today is the Sanskrit (and Hindi, Kannada) word for Sunday: 'Ravivaar' (रविवार, ರವಿವಾರ)

What I am struck by is how the concept of a Sun Day is common across cultures, 'ravi' being a name for the Sun... Dominicus, domenica (Italian), domingo(Spanish) are synonymous
Today's word is the delightful 'Sprachgefuhl': an intuitive feeling for the natural idiom of a language

#lingobingo
Going with the impromptu theme of 'words that don't sound anything like their meaning' today to match one from @Thea_ticky_MR and choosing 'Effulgence': the quality of being bright and sending out rays of light

My mind always heads towards 'effluent' on hearing it 😒
#lingobingo
And today we have 'Legerdemain': an illusory feat, sleight of hand, prestidigitation etc

Or as I like to think of it, what the sun does on winter days in the UK

#lingobingo
Word today is 'Ameliorate': to make/feel better, amend or bounce back

#lingobingo
So I did a little math yesterday and apparently, I've been learning Italian for about 2 years now 😱

Duolingo was my primary source, I now learn skimming Instagram captions, or Italian translations of favourite books

Learning only new words is more fun, admittedly #lingobingo
Today's word therefore is a reigning favourite of mine from Italian, I Iove how it sounds

'Mezzogiorno', meaning midday

#lingobingo
Time feels like it has a mind of its own right now... Today's word is the Kannada one for 'moment' therefore, the beautiful sounding 'KshaNa'

The N has a hard emphasis, pronounced by moving your tongue from the roof to the floor of the mouth in a speedy arc

#lingobingo
There isn't an equivalent to the sound in English

It's written ಕ್ಷಣ in the script of Kannada #lingobingo
Today's word is 'Rataplan', synonym for drumbeat. Perfect for the alt/indie rock playlist I currently have playing

#lingobingo
Today's word is 'Nebulous': cloudy, indistinct or not clearly defined

#lingobingo
Going with 'Irascible' today, irritable or quick-tempered

#lingobingo
Today's word is more of a phrase, 'rim jhim' from Hindi (रिम झिम), meaning the pleasant sounding pitter-patter of raindrops

#lingobingo
Today's word is 'Exuberance', the quality of overflowing with joyful enthusiasm

It's what comes to mind when I look at that lower case 'e' in the font I use for these word tiles

#lingobingo
Word today is 'Infinitesimal', immeasurably small. Like a 'KshaNa' is in time

Something about it feels very poignant

#lingobingo
Word today is courtesy The X-Files and Agent Scully about to go and 'Finagle' some extra resources, by trickery or devious methods

#lingobingo
Here's a new word I've learned today

'Fictile', of or relating to pottery

#lingobingo
Today's word is one that has tickled my fancy

'Beetle-browed' meaning sullen or unfriendly looking

'Caterpillar-browed' would make more sense if you ask me but I like the alliteration of beetle-browed

#lingobingo
Today's word is 'Temerarious': presumptuously daring

For all the heroines and female role models I've ever admired, fictitious and real

#lingobingo
Today's word is a typography term that is very fun to say!

'Tittle' refers to the dot or diacritical mark appearing over a letter, such as the dot on an i or j

Fittingly, tittle also means a small, indefinite, scarcely measurable amount

#lingobingo
Today's word is courtesy the fabulous @susie_dent

'Apricity', the warmth of the sun on a chilly day

https://twitter.com/susie_dent/status/1225359154707075073?s=19

#lingobingo
Did you know that 'Snooker' also means fool or dupe?

#lingobingo
Today's word is 'Extraordinary', to describe Anne Hathaway's performance in Modern Love. Holy shit

'Meraviglioso', meaning wonderful

#lingobingo
One of my all time favorite words today, love how it sounds

'Svelte', meaning 'of delicate or thin build'

#lingobingo
Clichéd, but valid

Word today is the Kannada for 'love', 'Preeti' (ಪ್ರೀತಿ)

It's also a fairly common name for girls

#lingobingo
The Urdu 'mohabbat' sounds a lot more emphatic, elegant, sophisticated and sincere though, I think... Maybe even slightly mysterious, powerful and intoxicating

#lingobingo
Speaking of closeness, choosing its synonym today:

'Propinquity'

I think I like it just a little bit more than proximity

#lingobingo

https://twitter.com/anu_gram/status/1228631575472017411?s=19
Learned a new word today!

'Defilade': the arrangement of defensive fortifications against enemy fire

I'm reading a fast paced space opera with lots of space battles, and that's my source

#lingobingo
Another new word!

'Argot', meaning jargon, vernacular or slang particular to a specific group

#lingobingo
Today's word is delightfully short but expressive

'Futz', meaning to fool around or to act without plan or purpose

#lingobingo
Late entry today, picked the silly sounding 'Dingbat'

It means both a silly, empty-headed person, and also refers to symbols in character set that are not letters, numbers or punctuation

#lingobingo
Here's a word I wish I heard used more often in common parlance

'Snafu', situation normal all fucked up (WWII usage), meant to signal stalling or snarled up in complete confusion

I've also just discovered that one of its synonyms is 'embrangled', which I adore

#lingobingo
Choosing 'Sybarite' today, someone addicted to luxury and pleasures of the senses

Mostly so I can manifest it into being, and do away with the anhedonia I'm experiencing

#lingobingo
It's been a few years since I've read Anne of Green Gables but I still remember vividly how much 13yo me was taken with the concept of being 'Irrepressible', a word the book introduced me to and something I aspired to... Impossible to repress or control

#lingobingo
Word today is the evocative 'Gullywasher', meaning a typically short and heavy rainstorm

#lingobingo
Missed a post yesterday for the first time ever in this thread!

Choosing 'Ameliorate', to make/get better, to commemorate a positive change I'm experiencing

#lingobingo
And today's word is a new one I have learned

'Thersitical', meaning foul mouthed or the more fun to say 'scurrilous'

#lingobingo
Word today is courtesy a catch up of Elementary, the TV show

Sherlock uses the word 'Quotidian' and I love that it's a complicated sounding word that means routine, unremarkable or mundane... The irony of quotidian being not quotidian is amusing

#lingobingo
Today's word is also courtesy Elementary

'Sophistry', meaning a deliberately invalid argument displaying ingenuity in reasoning in the hope of deceiving someone

#lingobingo
Apropos of nothing, today's word is the Hindi for puzzle or riddle

'Paheli' (पहेली)

#lingobingo
To mark #LeapDay, today's word is 'Intercalary': inserted or interpolated in the calendar, as an extra day or month

#lingobingo
Word today is 'Limn', to trace, outline or make a portrait of

'Verisimilitude': the appearance of truth or the quality of seeming to be true

#lingobingo
Today's word is 'Deipnosophist', someone skilled at informal chitchat or small talk

#lingobingo
Ever feel an irresistible urge, like mania?

There's a word for it! 'Cacoethes'

#lingobingo
You know when you mishear or misinterpret something said aloud, often with funny results

It's called a 'Mondegreen', coined by Sylvia Wright in 1954. A little #IWD2020 tribute

I STILL mishear the chorus of Love Like This as 'bye bye biscuit boy' 🤨😐😂

#lingobingo
Just rediscovered a personal favourite from back in the day

'Pettifogging': arguing or quibbling over trivial, petty matters

#lingobingo
With all the support, encouragement and admiration being shared on #IWD2020, it's apt that today's word captures emotions felt when you revel in another's good fortune

'Mudita' is from Sanskrit but is found in several Indian languages, including Kannada (ಮುದಿತ)

#lingobingo
With the weather showing distinct change for the better, here's a word for those open air places we love in the summer

'Hypethral', wholly or partly open to the sky, especially of a classical building; having no roof

#lingobingo
Taking a leaf out of @FionaLMacIntyre's book and following suit with the Italian 'Speranza' today

Hope, always a good thing to have in worrying times. Not the only thing to rely on, of course, but still an important thing to have in your arsenal

#lingobingo
I find the language in Regency and pre-Regency era books to be particularly colourful. Sure they used 10 words where 1 might suffice but that's forgivable when you encounter delightful terms such as 'nip cheese', meaning a stingy, miserly person, a penny pincher

#lingobingo
Continuing the theme today with 'Fribbling': to be or act in a trifling or foolish manner

#lingobingo
As things continue to get more serious and uncertain, here's hoping everyone who needs it has 'Raksha' (रक्षा Sanskrit, ರಕ್ಷಾ Kannada), protection and security from any and all threats

Stay safe, and stay home so everyone has the best chance at getting through this

#lingobingo
I realised I haven't posted a single word from Marathi so that's today's source.

It's more a phrase, a relatively genteel exclamation/swear that's rather satisfying

'Aai shapath' (आई शपथ) literally translates to 'mother promise' or 'I swear on my mother'

#lingobingo
Word today is a prayer for these uncertain times.

'Phronesis', wisdom in determining ends and the means of attaining them.

May we all do our part towards ending this crisis.

#lingobingo
Here's a curious emotion

'Pronoia', a strange, creeping feeling that everyone is out to help you

I hope everyone feels it at least once in their life

#lingobingo
It feels appropriate to choose 'Liminal' today.
'At a threshold or transitional stage. Also of a stimulus just strong enough to be consciously experienced

Source: https://twitter.com/TheClaudiaBlack/status/1240805036432568322?s=19

Entry yesterday should have been 'Jabberwocky', an example of writing/speech containing or made up of meaningless words

#lingobingo
Today's entry inspired by a childhood memory of my brother asking for something 'Swadisht' for lunch/dinner.

A Sanskrit word (स्वादिष्ट, Kannada ಸ್ವಾದಿಷ್ಟ), literally translating to 'flavourful' but 'lip-smackingly tasty' is a closer interpretation.

#lingobingo

The only thing more satisfying than saying the word 'Stupefaction' is being able to cause that reaction in someone else, a reaction of amazemen or astonishment
