Alright, i have a few minutes of free time, so im going to get on that Sylvain thread i said I& #39;d make lol. So, let& #39;s get into it. @DailySylvainJG
Sylvain Jose Gautier is the second son of Margrave Gautier, and the current heir to his house; made so after his family disinherited his elder brother Miklan because he lacked a crest. This instilled a bitter hatred in Miklan and soured the relationship between them.
No thread about Sylvain can be done without stating the importance of crests in his development. In Sylvain& #39;s case, the Crest of Gautier literally became what he was defined by. The prestige of his crest led to people pretending to like him in order to attain his favor.
This created a issue of trust in Sylvain: he could never yell whether or not someone genuinely liked him or if they were just pretending to in order to reap the rewards of being with him.
This isn& #39;t without merit either; in Fodlan, having a relationship and by extension a child with a crest bearer can immediately elevate someone to a high position of power. Many people only see crest bearers as a means to a end; a weapon or step on up the social ladder.
Sylvain& #39;s issue with trust is a result of that. Despite popular belief, i do not believe Sylvain hates women in general, his hatred seems to be reserved for noblewomen; people he views as trying to use him for their social advancement.
Once again, this is not without merit: Sylvain has a reputation as a playboy, a good for nothing, someone who can& #39;t be trusted. Thus in Sylvain& #39;s eyes, anyone who throws themselves at him or fawns over him must have a ulterior motive.
This is clear in his interactions with women who don& #39;t do that. Women who aren& #39;t immediately receptive to his flirtations he respects; because it& #39;s clear they aren& #39;t trying to use him.
In fact, Sylvain only A supports with a few people; 5 actually. The player, who can be Male or Female, and 4 others, 3 of whom are women. Everyone else only gets to a B support, because he doesn& #39;t let everyone in.
Sylvain has only ever been valued for his crest; his family, other nobles, society as a whole never valued him as a person; as a human being.
It& #39;s when Sylvain decides to live his life divorced of his crest that the true Sylvain shines through the laidback, cynical, and carefree facade he puts forward: loving, Self Sacrificing, honorable and devoted; prepared to put his life on the line for his friends and family.
He does have a darkness in him, however. His jealousy of the player character being able to live their lives without being dictated by their crest evolves into a hatred if you become enemies. In the male characters case, he expresses joy at the prospect of killing you in battle.
Further, aside from the initial nervousness at siding against his former allies; on the Crimson Flower path, he has very little problems killing his former friends. This is due to his ideological correlation with Edelgard: he hates Crests.
If it& #39;s for a world without crests, he will do whatever it takes. This is in sharp contrast with characters like Felix, Ingrid and Annette, who become traumatized by killing their former countrymen. Sylvain& #39;s ending on that route doesn& #39;t change, he lives rather happily.
In regards to his endings, his ending with Mercedes reflects his former relationship with his brother Miklan. Despite Miklan& #39;s hatred of him, Sylvain never reciprocated. He fully understood his brother& #39;s pain. Though he hated how Miklan treated him, he only felt pity for him.
In his ending with Mercedes, he is succeeded by his eldest child: who has no crest. In that sense, he posthumously reconciled with his brother, by stopping the cycle that led to his brother& #39;s pain and eventual death.
In conclusion, Sylvain is a amazing human being, who, despite his poor reputation, has a rare humanity that is sorely lacking these days. He is a person who& #39;s instinctive reaction is to save people; to place his body in front of danger to shield people with his life.
For this reason, i genuinely admire and respect him; and im proud to call him my husband. Im sorry for the essay, but i hope you found it informative and enjoyable.
