Thread: For those who don& #39;t understand why the sports media needs to make a concerted effort to cover women& #39;s sports: consider a 400 meter race.

If the inside and outside lane started at the same point, the inside lane would have an unfair advantage. There& #39;s less track to run.
That is why in a 400 meter race, the outside lane starts considerably ahead of the inside lane.

Women& #39;s sports = the outside lane.

Example: PSU& #39;s first varsity women& #39;s team was in 1964.

The federal government had to enact a law (Title IX) to ensure fairness.
Men& #39;s sports are hundreds of years ahead of women& #39;s in terms of investment and coverage.

You would not race the 400 meter with everyone starting at the same spot.

But that is how women& #39;s sports coverage has been thus far.
So yes, women& #39;s sports, the outside lane in this "400 meter race" needs to start ahead to have a level playing field.

To say that women& #39;s sports "don& #39;t do as well" in the media is based off of inconsistent coverage and men& #39;s sports having a large lead.
By making an active effort in covering women& #39;s sports, the media can help move up that outside lane.

Because women& #39;s sports has more considerable ground to cover.
