Thread: For those who don't understand why the sports media needs to make a concerted effort to cover women's sports: consider a 400 meter race.

If the inside and outside lane started at the same point, the inside lane would have an unfair advantage. There's less track to run.
That is why in a 400 meter race, the outside lane starts considerably ahead of the inside lane.

Women's sports = the outside lane.

Example: PSU's first varsity women's team was in 1964.

The federal government had to enact a law (Title IX) to ensure fairness.
Men's sports are hundreds of years ahead of women's in terms of investment and coverage.

You would not race the 400 meter with everyone starting at the same spot.

But that is how women's sports coverage has been thus far.
So yes, women's sports, the outside lane in this "400 meter race" needs to start ahead to have a level playing field.

To say that women's sports "don't do as well" in the media is based off of inconsistent coverage and men's sports having a large lead.
By making an active effort in covering women's sports, the media can help move up that outside lane.

Because women's sports has more considerable ground to cover.
