Remembering Claudia Jones who died on 24 December 1964. Journalist and activist. Regarded as the "mother of Nottinghill Carnival". Claudia founded Britain's first major Black newspaper, West Indian Gazette, in 1958. A legend. 👑
In her last published essay, "The Caribbean Community in Britain" (1964), Jones said of the West Indian Gazette: "The newspaper has served as a catalyst, quickening the awareness, socially and politically, of West Indians, Afro-Asians and their friends".
Many also regard Rhaune Laslett, a Russian/Native American social worker, as the mother of Notting Hill Carnival. Its true founder. Rhaune was the main organiser of the week-long Notting Hill Fayre (1966) which evolved into carnival as we know it. https://archive.voice-online.co.uk/article/rhaune-laslett-true-founder-notting-hill-carnival
Big up both queens. May they rest in peace 🙏🏾
