🔹Intro:

“‘Tonight’ is a great example of Jin strength as a ballad writer and ever-growing skills as a vocalist. Through his solo work we see a more mature side to him, one that finds the beauty in simplicity.“

Tonight by Jin was released in June 2019 as part of BTS’ annual FESTA celebrations.

Festa is a period of time where BTS celebrate their debut anniversary by making & releasing a variety of content for free as a gift for fans

Jin’s blog post:

“Hello, this is Jin. This is a song that I wrote while thinking of my pets. Its the first time I’ve written my own song & I hope you enjoy listening to it. I’ll work hard while making music next time too so that I can present a good song to u. Thank you, ARMY.”
Jin has always loved his pets with all his heart & continuously spoke of them with extreme fondness.

Around 9 months ago, in an emotional live, Jin spoke about the unfortunate passing of his pet sugar glider, Odeng, for the first time.

Jin went on to write ‘Tonight’ with a little help from band member, RM, who worked on some parts with him. Namjoon talks about being surprised by Jins message & initially thinking it was an April Fools prank. Both Jimin & Namjoon compliment Jin’s vocals.

1. Fear

One thing I love about ‘Tonight’ is Jins unique use of space & ability to emotion into each & every word

He begins the song with a gentle softness. The space within his words make him sound as if he’s lost in thought, alone.

#BeyondTheLyric
He’s afraid, scared that tomorrow will bring news of loss & in those moments images/memories flash in front of him.

The memories stick to him as if he’s clinging onto them & he questions the reality that perhaps tomorrow they will not make new memories together

2. Entwined

this is perhaps one of my favourite parts of the track. Jin shows that his pets were as much a part of his life as day & night were. the idea of not having them in his life is so incomprehensible that he finds himself asking the same question again & again
For Jin, his pets were his companions.

Doolset explains that in Korea, many people have more recently been referring to their pets as life long companions instead & Jin is one of those people

3. Loss

What’s so comforting about Tonight is how it understands the process of mourning. Whether you’ve experienced the loss of a pet or not, this song vividly encompasses the emotions of losing a loved one.

#BeyondTheLyric
At this stage it’s as if hes accepting the reality of his loss. Jin closes his eyes once again & says that only the happy memories will come to his mind.

It’s heartbreaking but also incredibly comforting in the way you can relate to his experience

I think what’s interesting here is that last word - ‘alone’

There is a loneliness in loss that is rarely acknowledged. You are alone in your grief, you are alone in mourning. Even with support around you, you can feel incredibly lonely

#BeyondTheLyric
That loneliness & distance is only further emphasised at the end of the song where it sounds like you’re hearing Jin through some kind of device.

You can hear someone press play & as the tape begins to roll, Jin softly sings the last verse

🔸 Conclusion:

Tonight travels through the fear of loss in many ways, not just fear of losing a loved one but also the fear of losing ur memories with that loved one & losing that togetherness with them. Its scary experiencing that & Jin displays it so well here

#BeyondTheLyric
Jin’s love for animals goes far beyond this song

Despite his many acts of philanthropy & quiet donations to UNICEF on a monthly basis, Jin also donated huge amounts of dog food to shelters in need. The following year his fans (ARMYs) celebrated his birthday with the same gesture
One thing that should be noted is Jin’s passion & dedication in making this song

Despite being incredibly busy on tour in Europe, Jin felt like the song needed more work. Although it was already fully recorded in Korea, Pdogg flew out to Europe so Jin could re-record
Jin is an incredibly talented & devoted artist. You can see how much work he has put into this.

Each word, each line needs to be to be perfected, has to sound just right so that he can capture his vision for the song.

Jin put a lot of love & care into this track. He worked meticulously on each detail & worked hard to make sure it was at a level that he was happy with.

For Jin, Tonight is a really special song & one I’m incredibly grateful he released.
