A reminder that climate change isn't coming. It is here. It's been here. And it goes beyond dealing with more thunderstorms or warmer weather. It goes beyond physical and/or biological adaptation (which happens over several generations btw).
It's also about the increased cost of the resources you depend on because of some drought or some disease wiped out 70% of the crops and animals.
It's about spending your two months salary on your mom's medical bills because she fell ill will something which was caused or exacerbated by the subtle effects of climate change.
It's about shattering livelihoods and forcing people to engage in vices they'd otherwise not engage in. And all the accompanying effects of that.
It's about those kids in rural areas being cut off from school and opportunities because sea level rise split their community into two.
It's about countries shutting down their borders and/or fighting with other countries over finite resources, directly or indirectly. Killing thousands in the process.
It's about your government spending 'development money' on disaster management and adaptation programs.
It's about developing countries negotiating trash deals with developed countries because we're at a disadvantage.
It's about urban congestion because of people moving in hopes of surviving.
And yes, it's also about biological and physical adaptation. 60% of animal populations wiped out in less than 50 years. 467 species declared extinct this decade. I don't think we're doing too good on adaptation.
Yes it poses an existential risk to humans as well. Millions are dead and dying already. And even if we do live, we have to ask if life would be worth living.
These things are happening now. Today. If you are alive today, you will 100% witness/experience most of these issues and more. The fight to mitigate the effects of climate change is just that. Mitigation. Reducing the effects. Mostly for the unborn.
Sorry for the doomsday thread (I hate the doomsday articles and reports) but someone had to explain the multidimensional effects of climate change. I hope this was practical enough.
