dazai remembering odasaku: a thread
in episode 11 of s2, dazai begins to guide kyouka down the path of the detective agency. gripping the matchbox from bar lupin, remembering the person odasaku was and possibly encouraged by oda’s final words to him to “protect/save the orphans,” he talks her through the decision.
this talk continues in s2e12. atsushi is obviously kyouka’s guiding light, but dazai is giving her the push she needs to believe that, like him and like odasaku, she can still be a good person in spite of what she’s done.

as far as i know, this is an anime only scene. dazai repeating odasaku’s words is beautiful, honestly, and hirotsu saying “ten’i muhou,” (a novel by the actual oda sakunosuke aka “flawless”), implying he knows who told dazai that?

the grave scene in dead apple where we were forced to relive odasaku’s d**th but at the same time got to see dazai’s gentle smile toward atsushi asking about him as well as atsushi asking “was it someone you were in love with?”

the bar scene in dead apple.. dazai ordering odasaku’s usual drink, adorning it in his memory, talking to him as if he’s still there. dazai truly never gets bored of talking to oda, even after he’s gone.
throwing things out of order a bit to add on a scene I STRAIGHT UP FORGOT. i’m sorry!! but near the beginning of s2e11, with dazai initiating contact with kyouka, he says these very important words while thinking of a very important person that strike a chord with kyouka.
and the pages from chapter 34 to match and better show kyouka’s reaction.
dazai compares atsushi and akutagawa to himself and odasaku and ends season 3 with a word-by-word repeat of oda’s own toast from just before dazai lost not only ango as a friend, but odasaku completely

finally, i& #39;ll be ending this (for now!) on a high note (haha not really) with this page from the beast au light novel, and with dazai& #39;s serene smile as he thinks about odasaku writing and completing his novel

I NOW HAVE CONTEXT. this is from ln4 (55 minutes) and it’s in atsushi’s pov. he thinks he sees cigarette smoke reflecting in dazai’s eyes as dazai vividly recalls what happened with mimic and odasaku’s death, saying “they died satisfied,” knowing oda didn’t die for nothing.
