If you don’t know about the First Minnesota, those 262 gents saved the day at a little affair called Gettysburg, and suffered EIGHTY-TWO PERCENT casualties. And as they did, Private Marshall Sherman (that’s him) captured a Virginia flag, which has been in Minnesota ever since.

Do YOU wanna put on your Kid Rock Confederate flag flip-flops and struggle out of your basement dwelling and tell Mr. Sherman you want his flag back?

In 1905, citing a law about war relics, Virginia asked for the flag back.

Minnesota said no.

In 1962, with the 100th anniversary of the war approaching, Virginia tried again.

Minnesota said no.

In 1998, Virginia reenactors threatened to sue.

Minnesota said no.

Look, there are a lot of reasons I love Jesse Ventura, but I have never loved him more than when Virginia legislators tried again to get the flag back in 2000. The then-governor of Minnesota said: “Why? We won. … We took it.”

“That makes it our heritage.”

So @NikkiHaley, the next time you wanna stir up painful shit and blow your party's racist dog whistle by claiming in 2019 that the Confederate flag is about “heritage,” remember this:

Heritage works both ways.
