now that snowdome's tl's are out i can finally talk about mika's confession!

it's so extremely heartfelt and shows the true volume of love he holds for shu. he utterly and completely loves every part of his person and wishes shu to feel the same level of trust towards him...😢
while we only have shu's heavy (but all so significant) silence as an response before the scene fades the next day we have this...shu telling mika /promise/ to stay by his side.
for shu to say this is now in winter is incredibly significant as his actions in repayfes are much clearer to understand, as are mika's hurt feelings and anger at what had said to him in several instances...
one example is mika's feeling after shu says he can still leave him because he doesnt want mika to be trapped - comparing mika's feelings to nazuna's. and....it frustrated mika so much! after he thought he made it SO CLEAR that he wants to be by shu's side.
and it was especially hurtful to mika because shu said all of these allusions to mika leaving him even concluding that it's because he was thinking of him - because mika's important to him. it was the complete opposite of what mika found important in snowdome: them together.
not to mention, you have to already think of the blow that mika obviously took earlier at learning that shu's going abroad. mika being upset about it isnt a surprise to us, the readers obviously, of course he would have a tantrum
but the impact after mika's "so make sure you take me to all the places you go, okay?"

the pain mika must've felt...shu's description of it being "a tantrum" is a complete understatement. mika, whose ultimate fear is being thrown away...the news must've devastated him.
however! this is not to paint shu as nonreciprocating or ignoring mika's feeling purposefully!! we /know/ that he cherishes mika. shu had confessed back that mika's important to him..that he wants to understand him. he just still quite /hasn't/.
here the meaning behind the snowdome and him breaking his mother's as a child come into play. breaking such a beautiful, valuable thing and thinking he had lost his mother's trust forever shocked him the point of him catching a fever.
as we see from shu feverishly still dreaming of the event that shu is deeply fearful of breaking things he finds beautiful or of value. and while mika tries to placate him, telling shu that he's already a little broken so he can have him...shu's trauma was not fixed that easily.
and thus, when shu reiterates that mika can still leave like nazuna, it's him still expressing that fear. he's still afraid that he'll "break" mika - ruin their relationship. however he also knows that by keeping mika "locked up"- having mika think of himself as his doll,
keep doing chores, not exploring his own potential shu /knows/ mika has- was more tragic.

it's not that shu ignored mika's wish or that he forgot telling mika to promise to say by his side, it's because... what if there /is/ the chance that mika doesn't, just like nazuna?
he wants mika to be aware that shu isnt forcing that promise on him - that he can he live as he wants.

he's saying this /because/ mika is important to him and wants him to be happy....even if shu truly wants to be with him all the same.
we also have to remember that despite his feelings, shu wants a partner that's an equal; "someone he can motivate and who can motivate him back". he wants someone who can value and create art with AND independently of him.

at that point, mika hadnt still reached this standard.
just because shu cares for and sees mika's potential as an artist, it doesnt mean he'll allow himself to compromise as mika can just as easily fail to become one.

and that is why shu decides to take action - forcibly push mika away so he can discover life w/o shu.
and so how did shu do that? by literally taking mika's confession of unconditional love and their wishes and promises to stay by each other's forever from snowdome and spitting it in mika's face.

we can now really see how it was the biggest gamble of shu's life.
BASICALLY what i want to show is that maiko really did her homework here trying to connect this story with human comedy and the conflicts present there!!! i really enjoyed her writing - a really great mix of yuuki's fluff and akira's plot.
she also did NOT tone down any romantic aspects at all. im a #1 shumika shipper, so im biased, but i have a really hard time seeing chapter 8 as anything but as an romantic confession from mika.
there was no spoken "i love you", but at this point in time, where shu is still working out his own feelings about mika and reallllly struggles voicing his true feelings about mika - even to his confidant, mademoiselle, I feel that it would've backfired or been brushed off then.
rather, mika takes perhaps their most romantically intimate moment (them holding hands walking home) and not only tells shu "this was important me and every other moment im with you i cherish just the same", but he immortalizes it- makes it into art. something shu understands.
as we saw, that had struck something in shu.

however, connecting that to what shu says in the epilogue of human comedy...? i think it speaks volumes about about shu's /very mutual/ feelings to be with mika for the rest of his life.
