The Mystery of Lorde (a thread)

Throwback to 2012 when Lorde released the Love Club EP for free on Soundcloud. The EP gained fame fast but most people never knew anything about her or what she actually looked like, except for this vague, mysterious drawing of a girl holding a rat with a snake wrapped around her

When her identity was finally public after commercialization of the EP, people began questioning her age because it was so uncanny for a 15 year old to be so self aware and have such strong opinions on life. All these doubts were brought about by the mystery surrounding her

Lorde even furthered her enigmatic personality with the cover of Pure Heroine album which was so simple, yet subtle, and contrary to the elaborate and grand album covers that was demanded from pop stars and still is

Fast forward to 2018 when rumours started circulating online about a supposed affair between Jack Antonoff and Lorde, which ALLEGEDLY had lead to the end of Jack's relationship with Lena Dunham. They both denied it, but this probing and speculation of her life must have been...

...upsetting to Lorde. This, coupled with the backlash she received from mistakenly linking a Whitney Houston lyric to a picture of a bath she was preparing at her hotel while on tour, must have made her refocus her view on social media, which until then she was an active user

A few weeks later, Lorde clears up her social media pages and leaves a comment on a stan page saying she's "pulling back the curtain

While we're in an age where pop star's lives are open to critique and easily accessible through the click of a button, Lorde was taking back that power, so that she herself can make a description of her life events on her own terms and at her own time of choosing

A good example is with the loss of her pet and year-long companion, Pearl. Fans didn't have a clue about his death for an entire MONTH, only until Lorde was ready to disclose this information and make it public

Fans have been lucky enough to be catching a glimpse of her occasionally through Lorde's friend's socials, paparazzi shots or when someone spots her in public and manages to get a picture of/with her; but this has never fully filled the gaping hole of her social media absence

As of now we don't know all the experiences Lorde has gone through over the past year since the Melodrama World Tour came to a close, what new relationships she's forged or what changes she's made in her life. It will all be exclusively up to her to convey this information to us

Once Lorde is ready to come back onto the music scene, not only her fans but also the more clueless GP will be interested to find out what this talented woman has been up to during her hiatus

At the end of the day, less actually proves to be more. The fact that little is known about her life now and also that she's been absent from the music scene for quite a while, is already a very powerful marketing tool for her upcoming era and maybe even for the eras after that.
