I have worked intersectionally for yrs. So I understand the frustration behind Ald. Moore's remarks. Eileen & I helped form APIs4BlackLives. Our voices, lived exp also matter.

#StLouis has a long history of erasing many communities of color.
Incl on the N side. After Hop Alley was erased (Chinese Ams were forced to live there), the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Ass'n moved north, where it was displaced by a developer (again.) Then it moved to S Grand.

Anti-miscegenation. Exclusion. Internment. Page Acts.
There was and is no upside to being quoted on the record (I said as much in the interview) in a town where electeds like to dox private citizens w/o repercussions. Other than a lot of Asian Ams were frustrated by Ald. Moore's remarks. And others didn't want to go on the record.
And I respect the intersectional lens that @24thWardSTL brought. The #Census2020 work I do is in solidarity w/ African immigrant communities & Latinx leaders. This is apparently confusing to some ppl but the fears & concerns are shared. So we just share info in diff langs.
I would also like to thank the white and African American allies who weighed in on this.

And thank the county for inviting me to be on their Complete Counts Committee, and the city & state for allowing me to attend their CCCs.

Change happens through coalition building.
I understand the frustration about not feeling included or invited to the table to share a perspective. Bc we generally don't, and on such an important issue as our region's future. I respect the battles the Black Caucus has fought to ensure representation on many issues.
There is a lot that is broken, a lot to re/build, a lot of opportunities to do the work. I did this interview pre-Thanksgiving which was a good opportunity for reflection.
