honestly just like to hear myself talk so

thread of female directed movies (that i saw lol) from this year and why you should watch them! ☝️😤🌼🎬🍿
fyre fraud

you remember the dueling fyre docs. luckily there was enough information between the 2 of them to work in tandem rather than opposition. this one took an interesting approach in focusing more on influencer culture. also follows the twitter acc that exposed fyre
kitbull

very adorable short film! it's about a stray kitten who meets a pit bull. my cat loved it and you probably will too
purl

another short film! inspired by the writer/director's experience being the only woman on her team at pixar. a sweet and funny story about inclusivity and solidarity
captain marvel

much needed breath of fresh air in the mcu. not the only standalone movie in phase 3, but arguably the one most removed from the larger infinity gauntlet story. fun 90's throwback vibe ✌️
after

cinematic bubblegum. perfect for a girls night or rabbit! seeing it in a theater of ex-directioner 20-somethings was such a rush. often cringey but the cringe is part of what makes it lovable. nothing is more female gazey than the mind of a teenage girl
little

I'm a bit biased because Big happens to be one of my favorite movies, but this was adorable! Issa is a total star in her own right but also has a hilarious dynamic with Marsai, who is also the film's executive producer (the youngest ever!) And the outfits are to die for
homecoming

i mean, truly what needs to be said beyond beyonce. wonderfully directed recording of her flawless coachella performances paired with some lovely behind the scenes rehearsal footage
high life

still hard to wrap my mind around this one even months later. a treasure trove to draw themes and ideas out of, like masculinity, paternity, sexuality, incarceration, and denis's own feelings toward making her first english language film
the mustang

one of the simplest and most oft-explored themes of the past few years has been forgiveness and rehabilitation. unlearning violence is hard enough, but even harder to learn vulnerability. it's a horse movie, yeah
knock down the house

worth watching for all the inspiring ladies that are featured but the biggest draw is that it follows AOC through her 2018 primary campaign. an ode to grassroots movements and essential viewing for anyone interested in politics of today
wild nights with emily

a comedy with a drunk history-esque tone that re-examines the private life of the notoriously recluse emily dickinson. some very clever bits. not to praise a man in this movie by for and about lesbians, but brett gelman is hilarious in it!
booksmart

tbh instant entry into the teen film canon! the silly raunchy comedy that girls deserve. very *of the moment* making it better to watch sooner rather than later. side splitting from the small one liners to the broad physical comedy. uniquely fun characters
attenborough’s wonder of eggs
attenborough and the sea dragon

combining these 2 lol. ok so i LOVED wonder of eggs. birds are so cool and there's much to be said about the little miracles of nature that you probably overlook. sea dragon is cool for people who like fossils/history
poms

another charming underdog story about a group of misfits coming together to do something in the same vein as the full monty. focusing on women and friendship makes it extra nice. perfect for a sunday afternoon when you just want something pleasant and light
sword of trust

one of my favorite movies of the year!! jillian bell and marc maron's personalities shine through the improv-heavy scenes falling down a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories. esp fun if you're familiar with flat earthers and the like. it's only 88 minutes!
the sun is also a star

it's kismet! a good modern new york movie, which is surprisingly rare? YA lit based romance so it's a bit dreamy. touches on current immigration issue. taurus cinema and imo the most underrated movie of the year
wine country

amy poehler, rachel dratch, ana gasteyer, maya rudolph, paula pell, emily spivey, tina fey, cherry jones, jason schwartzman
anthropocene: the human epoch

oof. probably the most affecting doc i've seen this year bc i--no exaggeration--literally think about it every goddamn day. not all doom and gloom but an urgent call for a better and more sustainable future. narrated by alicia vikander 😍💞
blinded by the light

everyone better start supporting this movie right now. you don't have to already love springsteen but it certainly wouldn't hurt. huge crowd pleaser and easily lovable for anyone who's ever had their own artist they obsessed over
the nightingale

not for the faint of heart. gruesome, violent, shocking. an irish convict and an aboriginal tracker must survive the tasmanian wilderness and the most terrifying horror of all: white men. a complicated & divisive movie but also powerful & worth assessing yourself
miss bala

you don't see too many action-thrillers directed by women! kind of a tense b-movie bordering on exploitation; good if you're into that sort of thing! men are trash but wbk
always be my maybe

everyone loves a good friends-to-lovers. plus i wholly support randall park's career ascent to hollywood comedy royalty. the film is much more than its keanu reeves cameo, but the keanu cameo really is fantastic!
late night

a rom com of sorts but as the protagonist points out, the more significant love story is the friendship between the long time talk show host and the new hire to her writing staff. writer/star mindy kaling brings her signature quick quirky style of comedy
the farewell

beautiful meditation on family, grief, and communication. is it better to be honest with someone you love dearly or to quietly shoulder a burden for them? somber and contemplative but also deeply funny in turns, not unlike real family gatherings
the kitchen

2019 has been a good year for giving women their own place in male dominated genres. while I wish this leaned a little more into comedy (what a wealth of talent!), it's still a satisfying and pulpy 70's mob film. the soundtrack is a tad obvious but great
portrait of a lady on fire

phenomenal. brimming with desire. almost like a fairy tale; heloise is like a princess locked in a tower, betrothed to an unwanted suitor. a very literal exploration of the female gaze. totally electrifying to watch
hustlers

similar to the kitchen in the role it fills. a flashy crime movie but this time women are in control, both on and off camera. wildly entertaining! palmer and reinhart are scene stealers in their smaller supporting roles. men arent allowed to watch this
k-12

admittedly my first exposure to miss martinez. her music is catchy! and she's concerned with things that alot of young women are: female sexuality but also their sexualization by men, gender roles/identity, public performance not only as a celeb but also as a woman
tall girl

I promise it's not as bad as you think it is. surprisingly funny! moreso than most netflix teen movies. some creative direction and editing that supply extra laughs. super cute, another good one to watch with friends. wearing mens size 13 nikes WOULD be hard!
