to the non-HKers who are following me for the #HongKongProtests:

sorry about the whole neo-nazi freak out 🙏🏼 to sum it up, there are some suspicious characters at the fringes of HK‘s pro-democracy movement.

the majority of HKers are NOT aligning with these fringe thoughts! 1/?
while it may seem that HKers are sliding closer and closer to extremist views (e.g. alt-right imagery, white supremacist allies),

𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿

2/?
yes, there is a small and vocal minority that is advocating increasingly dangerous ideals, and yes, as we become more desperate, we begin to grab at any straws we can reach, which can lead to some dangerous alliances (3/?)
there are some HKers who think “the end justifies the means” or “why turn any help down?” yes, these thoughts exist, and they are getting louder, sadly. desperation is strong in this city 4/?
but there is still the vast majority who do not even realize this alignment is going on — the older folks who don’t follow intoerbational news, the normal citizens who support the movement but don’t throw their entire lives into it, etc.

5/?
and there are those of us who are working actively to combat this kind of extremism. we may be a smaller and less visible group, but we exist.

please, don’t write HK off as “lost to the alt-right”!

6/?
we are trying. and part of the reason why the extremist voices are so loud is because there is a LOT of outside extremist support from all around the world. even the moderate right is much louder than the moderate left.

7/?
if you are watching the #HongKongProtests from overseas and shaking your head at how the movement has shifted to one side — please, speak out for us! call your leaders, ask them to speak out for HK. the silence on the left is making the right even louder 8/?
key points im trying to make:

• the HK movement is not far-right
• the international right is more outspoken than the left, and therefore has more influence in HK
• there are HKers actively combating extremism
• HK needs your help against extremism
9/?
so please: if you are thinking “hong kong is doomed, it’s been eaten up by pepe and alt-right folks”, we’re not there yet! but we’re going to need a lot of loud, trustworthy, anti-alt-right voices to bridge that gap

please #StandWithHongKong — we need your help! 10/10
