#FishmongersHall: A thread on UK prison deradicalisation, etc:
1) Here is a summary of the government-commissioned report by Ian Acheson ( @NotThatBigIan) into #radicalisation & islamist extremism in UK prisons: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/islamist-extremism-in-prisons-probation-and-youth-justice/summary-of-the-main-findings-of-the-review-of-islamist-extremism-in-prisons-probation-and-youth-justice">https://www.gov.uk/governmen...

2) The UK government& #39;s response, where they accept and promise to implement 9 out of Acheson& #39;s 11 recommendations: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/islamist-extremism-in-prisons-probation-and-youth-justice/government-response-to-the-review-of-islamist-extremism-in-prisons-probation-and-youth-justice">https://www.gov.uk/governmen...
3) The UK Home Office ( @ukhomeoffice) factsheet on their new "Desistence (sic, for Desistance) & Disengagement Programme" for high-risk terrorists & potential terrorists, including returnee foreign fighters etc: https://homeofficemedia.blog.gov.uk/2019/11/05/fact-sheet-desistence-and-disengagement-programme-2/">https://homeofficemedia.blog.gov.uk/2019/11/0...
4) Note that the DDP programme was piloted from Oct 2016 for TACT (terrorism) offenders on licence & those on TPIMs & previously subject to Temporary Exclusion Orders. They all got theological, ideological & psychological intervention. In Dec 2018 it was extended to prisons.
5) Therefore, the DDP (Desistance & Disengagement Programme) was extended to prisons in the same month that Usman Khan was released on licence with a tag, i.e. December 2018 - https://homeofficemedia.blog.gov.uk/2019/11/05/fact-sheet-desistence-and-disengagement-programme-2/">https://homeofficemedia.blog.gov.uk/2019/11/0...
6) Presumably therefore, he didn& #39;t go through DDP. But he would have been assessed for risk using the #Extremism Risk Guidance (ERG - nothing to do with @Jacob_Rees_Mogg) - here is an evaluation of 171 of these completed for islamist extremists: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/816507/the-structural-properties-of-the-extremism-risk-guidelines-ERG22.pdf">https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/governmen...
7) Before DDP in prisons, the only relevant programme available was Healthy Identities Intervention (HII). A 2018 evaluation of 22 cases of HII work with convicts: 14 Al-Qaeda, 2 far-right, 1 animal-rights, 1 "other" political extremist, 4 gang-related: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/727966/Intervening_with_Extremist_Offenders_A_Pilot_Study.pdf">https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/governmen...
8) And here is @NotThatBigIan writing in @thesundaytimes 2 days after the #FishmongersHall attack. "Did ministers listen?" he asks about his 2016 report (see 1 above), and its aftermath. I hope they will now, if they didn& #39;t before! https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/london-bridge-attack-i-told-ministers-we-were-treating-terrorist-prisoners-with-jaw-dropping-naivety-did-they-listen-9ngbtgt7z">https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/l... // end of thread.
