Humans. If you want to know what it feels like to be a woman go ahead and attempt to put yourself in my shoes. Last night I completed a 7 day solo road trip up the coast to Oregon. It was incredible up until last night when a young man walked into the back of my campsite...
to awkwardly introduce himself and kick me out of the spot. He was living in the woods adjacent, asked my name, shook my hand, was confused that the camp host didn’t tell me it was his spot, suggested a specific spot for me to move to, and asked if I was camping alone.
He was passive aggressive but friendly and my “get the fuck out of here” sensors were blaring. With my heart racing he finally turned to walk back into the woods and I frantically threw my dog and gear back into my car. With my adrenaline pumping I drove out of the campground...
and back to the I-5 as fast as possible. I had cruise control at 90 the entire 6+ hours to La Mesa, only stopping once for curly fries and gas. My skin crawled as I drove through the night. I was shook. All in all it was an 18 hour day, my dog was a fucking trooper, and I’m safe.
Don’t ever go to Casswell Memorial State Park. It smells like shit and there’s sketchy people there. Also, if you experience male patterned privilege learn to be aware and actively look for ways to help the women in your life feel safe. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
