The single biggest issue facing high school football in VA is recruiting by public school coaches. I’m not pointing fingers, but it’s out of control at this point and somehow the @VHSL_ needs to address this. IMO if a player transfers then they sit out 1 year = problem solved.
It’s a dirty little secret that nobody wants to talk about but recruiting has ruined the concept of districts and public high school sports. Recruiting is happening in almost every sport now. Coaches are blatant and open about it now because they know there is no enforcement
How is it being done? Most kids that get recruited “lease” a home within the receiving district. Most don’t actually move but just produce the lease when registering for the new district. Some of these leases aren’t even legal leases. They just get a buddy to draw up a lease
In some counties, each school has an academic focus where the player doesn’t have to live in the actual district. All those coaches are doing is telling the player to tell admin they want to focus on that area of academics such as Drafting, HVAC.. and it’s perfectly legal in
those counties so the player transfers. It has nothing to do with academics... it’s all about recruting for a sport and the promise by the HS coach of getting the player recruited to play in college. If it was truly about academics then put the 1 year ban in place and see
how many transfer.

Is a 1 year ban realistic? Yes. It’s done all the time in VA and is already a rule enforced at the local level. It just depends on county rules and it’s superintendent. I’ve personally seen the ban happen and it prevents transfers in those counties.
The problem is it depends on each county superintendent. Let’s take this out if the decision making process for the local superintendent and make it a state wide rule... or the @VHSL_ will lose what makes it what it is... a public school system.
The 1 year ban is already in place by many a county in VA, but certainly not enforced by most. Make it statewide and end this madness and unfair public school sports practice that is ruining the integrity and concept of high school public sports in VA.
Putting the 1 year ban in place statewide will give everyone an equal chance at fair play and eliminate most of the recruiting by high school coaches and return @VHSL_ VA sports back to its innocence and purpose.
Right now there are literally literally bidding wars for certain athletes from high school public school coaches with false promises of playing time and getting the player recruited to play in college. This needs to end to protect the public school system.
It’s so out of control that there are literally HS coaches that find players homes to claim as a legal address. They have deals with real estate agents and apartment complexes to furnish leases and addresses... it ls way over the top and is an epidemic at this point.
A big factor in recruting is 7-on-7. Its where much of the recruiting takes place. Nefarious coaches are setting for profit 7-on-7 travel teams and using it as a recruting platform, as well as speed and conditioning programs.... all for profit into the pockets of those coaches
