This point right here is what I find particularly grating...There is a VERY LARGE section of romance that has no publisher, and can't get a publisher. Some of us are writing stories that traditional publishing won't acquire and if they do it's digital first which means... https://twitter.com/kj_charles/status/1200362369957978112
We may get a PW, Booklist or other reviews...but there's no print book, not a very substantial marketing plan and very minimal publicity. We don't get book launches, we don't get a whole lot and that's WITH a pub.. for those who are self-publishing...
Other than EW and NPR there are practically no media outlets looking for our work...We might as well not exist when it comes to getting on a roundup from Bustle, POPSUGAR, Hypable, etc...Because we don't have publicists putting our books out there.
What we do have are readers who are looking for queer romance, diverse romance, romance with non-binary characters, poly romance and all others kinds of romance trad publishing considers "not commercial" "not relatable" "not valuable"...
So I'd just like to hold up the privilege mirror for a moment to those that can afford to make statements like, this space that sees your value doesn't matter. Because of spaces like twitter BIPOC, Queer, marginalized creatives...
That otherwise would have NEVER been able to gain access to an audience that was EAGER to consume what they create, to hear what they had to say. Black Lives Matter started on this space, artists go viral here on a regular basis. Where did you think Lizzo did her thing for years?
These spaces are where we can connect with readers because we VERY limited alternatives, we don't have the privilege of choice.
