Work your heart out for *your* candidate.
Knock on doors for them.
Make calls for them.
Send texts for them.
Donate to their campaign.
Spread the word about them.
Vote for them.
Win your primary by standing *for* something and inspire other people to join you.
The day after Thanksgiving in 2016, I had lunch with another potential Dem candidate for the same House seat I was considering running for in 2017.
When we both decided to run, we pledged never to attack each other because our party had to be united to unseat a 26-year incumbent.
Later, when a third candidate announced his candidacy, I signed his petition form so he would qualify for the ballot.
Both of them would end up out-raising me by tens of thousands of dollars and out-mailing me 2:1.
But I never tore them down. My team and I worked hard and won.
We all had different priorities and different points of emphasis in our campaigns. Two of us were historic firsts.
And we all knew any of us would serve the people better than the incumbent we needed to unseat for the good of Virginia.
Remember the goal: win so you can serve.
Some people go negative during primaries because it can work - though not always.
We care as we do because we don’t want the people we’re fighting for to be forgotten or treated with lip service instead of served when their lives, liberty, justice and liberation are on the line.
Some people cast votes based on perceived electability, which I’ve addressed earlier (voting your values creates electability).
Some people vote for who they don’t like the least b/c they can’t stand the incumbent the most.
My challenge to candidates is to stand *for* something.
As a candidate, the tone you set is the example you set for the people who support you, especially during a primary where the winner will take on an entrenched incumbent.
Spend *your* time rallying *your* supporters and persuading voters why you’re best for the job.
Then go win.
If you win: reach out. You represent everyone now.
You can be true to your values without attacking your constituents.
And if you support a candidate: be a champion for *your* candidate.
Vote.
Win.
Reach out.
Unite.
Vote.
Win.
Reach out.
Serve.
Let’s go, America.
Let’s go win.
