The ridiculous cost of education, not to mention the gleeful profiting off of it, has left so many people, myself included, incapable of paying their outrageous debts and kept us from investing in the economy. It’s a shameful, bleeding wound.
And it’s had quiet but steep consequences, like turning the public against education and experts, leaving us vulnerable to disease and misinformation and disastrous policies. It’s as big and multifaceted and destructive a crisis as we’ve had.
Personally, I'll never forget receiving my student debt loan forgiveness letter after teaching at public universities for eleven years. The letter said I'd made 0 qualified payments. I literally fell to my knees in the driveway. Just a devastating thing.
If the student loan debt crisis proves anything, however, it's that this government has been bought and sold by the wealthy and turned completely against the business of the people. Something like this would have never happened had our interests been served.
