After being screwed by @United this trip, I am sharing some of what I learned. Some of this is common sense that’s easy to overlook, some of it is stuff I genuinely didn’t know
1. If there is weather along your route, call the airline in the morning and change your flight. Many airlines will make this change the day of without a fee. My brother in law (frequent flier and former Delta employee) recommended this and it worked on our flight out
2. Always pack absolute necessities in your “personal item.” Don’t be forgetful. For instance, I had my keys in a pocket in my checked luggage, which was a rookie mistake. Assume you may not reunite with checked luggage and that your carry on will be taken away.
3. I never understood the old adage “always pack extra underwear” but now I do. Pack it (and a clean shirt and pants if they fit) in your personal item. If you’re stranded, being able to change clothes will make the ordeal less gross feeling.
4. Desk staff at the airport want you to take the path of least resistance. Not all will go out of their way to help you or give you options. Be sure to ask for automatic rebooking in the event of cancellation or being switched to another airline. Or a refund. Ask directly.
5. Use the phone. Though customer service workers may not have all the same powers as airline staff at the airport, they also aren’t dealing with dozens of angry people in their face. They may be more helpful and faster.
Also use social media. Airlines respond to being shamed.
That’s it. What are your tips and hacks?
