In 1923 Ripudaman was forced into exile to Dehra Dun where his religiosity increased as did British anxiety about his potential for sedition. In 1927 he changed his name to Gurcharan Singh after taking initiation into the Khalsa, a year later he was stripped of his titles ....

Maharaja Ripudaman Singh (now simply Sardar Gurcharan Singh) died in Kodiakanal in 1942, he had married three times and had multiple children.
