Just back from Budapest which, like so many European capitals, has a big synagogue which is now a museum for a lost people, a murderered people.
Brits were never tested when it came to whether they would hide their Jewish friends or give them up to the SS. But the popularity of Oswald Mosley shows there would be enough to happily pack British Jews off to concentration camps. And from everyone else? Silence.
British Jews have never wanted to put Brit antisemitism to the test which is why we, in general, keep our heads down, don’t shout about our religion. And in general things have been as good for us as anywhere else in the diaspora. Better, in fact.
But now we are talking out about Jew-hate because we see so much of it. We have no choice. And what’s almost as bad as the sheer amount of hatred, has been the silence from those we deemed our friends. The excuses for supporting a party which has normalised Jew hate.
I can’t tell you how much that hurts.
The Brits could have taken thousands more. They took 50,000. They also turned back boatloads of refugees in Palestine - those refugees ended up in concentration camps. The Brits could have bombed railway tracks to concentration camps. They didn’t.
