Hello to TV anchors and journos in general -- CCTVs are *not* the beginning and end of 'women's safety'. It's good that you're having discussions and asking questions -- but let's collectively make this discourse better please. Here are some Qs and talking points:
1. Funds and money should not just be used for CCTVs -- CCTVs aren't going to stop a criminal. How much money is being spent to sensitise the police force? Will cops respond sensitively if a woman calls and says -- my bike tyre is punctured and I'm feeling unsafe?
2. How much diversity is there in our police force? How many women are there in leadership positions? How much training and support do these women leaders in the police force get?
3. What are the practices the police follow when it comes to cases? Do they follow the law and file cases - or do they simply 'counsel' and 'warn' men who have sexual misconduct allegations against them? What systems exist to ensure cops are incentivised to do the right thing?
4. No one likes to do extra work. None of us enjoy doing the work of 2-3 people while getting the salary of one. Are our police forces well staffed? Do they have proper leaves and off days? What are the underlying reasons why they don't file cases that are 'petty'?
5. Like CCTVs, there's only so much that cops can also do. What kind of sensitisation programmes is the government funding for all government service providers? What about public education?
6. Are our cities designed for all people, for all genders? Are we even thinking about this? What kind of public infrastructure exists to support all people at all hours of the day?

And how do we implement 'laws' with thoughtfulness and kindness?
(Please feel free to add points people.)
7. Let's also talk about why we -- media, families, communities, society -- only talk about gender based violence when the criminals are strangers. Why do we not care enough about violence perpetrated by family members?
I understand TV debates force you to focus on one point, have binarian debates, and have a 'villain'. It's not any single anchor's fault, not blaming individuals for it. Media has to collectively work to change that.
For *now* though -- if you must have single point discos...
Why is there such a high pendency of cases in the country?

Why are our conviction rates so low?

Why are men accused of sexual crimes given political tickets and ministerial berths?
Why isn't gender sensitivity part of our school education curriculum?

Why don't our cities have open recreational spaces that are accessible at all times of day and have people thronging them?

Why aren't there more women in politics and policy?
Why do our movies continue to project toxic masculinity as an ideal?

Why do film industries continue to employ sexual abusers and celebrate them?

Why don't we as a society understand consent? How can celebrities use their celebrity to change this?
Why is Vairamuthu not being held accountable?

Why does no one cancel Radha Ravi?

Why is Radha Ravi?
Why don't our cities have safe and reliable public transport at all hours of the day and night?
