So this was a fascinating experience the other night. A few of my older girls wanted to see some classic 80s movies they& #39;ve heard about, so we did a late night marathon with Back to the Future, Breakfast Club, and Ferris Bueller& #39;s Day Off. https://twitter.com/bekahmason/status/1200590231969370112">https://twitter.com/bekahmaso...
The first one was fine, and the second one prompted some good convos about exploring the rebellious and subversive aspects of early Gen-X culture.
They hated Ferris Bueller. HATED it.

With. A. Passion.
More to the point, they hated *him*. And given the ways our culture has shifted since then, even in the past couple of years, I started to realize why.
It& #39;s meant to be a shallow comedy, and really we only remember a few key funny scenes, but holy cow folks. Ferris is an incredibly masterful narcissistic manipulator, and that was screaming at them so loudly they could barely notice the inherent comic absurdity.
We& #39;ve come to the point in culture where self-absorption and manipulation are being more openly identified and called out, for absolutely good reasons, but I never would have anticipated hating Ferris Bueller as a side effect.
