I& #39;ve been enjoying listening to @DavidVStewart writestream. Really good stuff. I don& #39;t have the time to join the live chat, but I enjoy catching up when I& #39;m doing chores around the house. The last one focused on fandom. A concept I have a hard time with. https://youtu.be/QWTZ7ka4l9g ">https://youtu.be/QWTZ7ka4l...
I don& #39;t understand the "fan" concept. At least the hardcore fan concept. Example. I consider myself a Trek fan. Growing up I would watch TNG daily, had action figures(as a kid, opened) and got excited when new episodes came out. As an adult, I re-watched a lot of it.
Yet, while I consider myself a fan it& #39;s not part of my self-image or my identity. Yeah, I like Star Trek but it& #39;s just a show. I like DS9, TOS, and TNG. Tried Voyager, didn& #39;t like it, moved on. Tried Enterprise, didn& #39;t like it moved on. Never bothered with Discovery, no time.
I saw the first two JJ Treks in theaters. The first was fun but lacked intellectualism. The second was simply stupid. It was clear that JJ made Trek for people who didn& #39;t like Trek. I moved on. I haven& #39;t seen the third and most likely never will.
I feel the same way about Star Wars. The last SW movie I& #39;ve seen was The Phantom Menace. It was clear that Lucas wanted to make a franchise for children. I was in high school, had no interest in cgi puppets so I moved on.
I don& #39;t get angry, I don& #39;t get upset, I don& #39;t really care. When something I& #39;m excited about is disappointing I move on. Why? Because most things in life are disappointing. I have a hard time understanding the "fandom" thing. The crazy almost religious zeal some people have.
