I visited HKU in the middle of protests, and spoke to cleaners and part-time staff, who’d been instructed to keep on working.. Many HKers are struggling to stay afloat, and offered little protection or support in recent months. This is their story 🇭🇰 #HongKong https://twitter.com/scmpasia/status/1200565247003807744
Among those struggling to stay afloat was a 68 yr old HKU contract labourer who was aware of the risks but “no one else will hire me at this age.” He added that at least he lives alone and has no family to worry about him.. (Ty @JRae183)
In Shau Kei Wan, which has a high rate of elderly poverty, I talked to several elderly lined up outside the only restaurant in the area that gives out free riceboxes to the needy. They were 3 hours early, but food runs out as soon as it’s distributed at 6pm..
Besides tear gas, some said traffic disruptions were a source of concern for getting to govt-subsidised hospital visits. Side note: Ho Win Roasted Meat (好運燒臘飯店) funds its ricebox programme thru public donations. Support them! http://www.facebook.com/skwhowin
These are HK’s top 5 impoverished districts where 15-17% of individuals live on under $510 USD per month — much of that goes into expensive (imo overpriced) rents. Over the past 6mo, ALL of these areas have seen protest clashes and been hit w/ tear gas. #HongKong #inequality
