A long thread about joy, and writing, and @wattpad. Grab and adult beverage and settle in.
Over the coming months I’ll be moving everything off all ebook platforms and publishing my entire catalog on Wattpad. Some books will be free, others will be in the Paid Stories program.

Why am I doing this?

The answer: Joy.
Over the last year I’ve focused heavily on my indie publishing career. I’ve spent a lot of money and time learning to be an indie author. I’ve run ads, taken courses, hired people, attended conferences. And you know what?

I don’t like it.
Don’t get me wrong: I love writing. I love readers. I don’t love running a business. And to be a successful indie author you need to have at least a little desire to be a businessperson. I don't.
Especially now that I’ve gone back to journalism, I don’t have the time or energy...
...to report the news, write fiction and run a business. I've been appointed to an @AP team writing about voter demographics. This will take up a LOT of time in 2020. There's an election coming up. You might have heard about it.
Some people can juggle things amazingly well. I cannot.
And this is where the joy part comes in. I’m incredibly lucky to already have ties with Wattpad, an amazing company that is devoted to helping writers grow. When I met Wattpad CEO @allenlau in 2018 at WattCon, I felt I was in the presence of a visionary.
The company is doing some amazing things, and I am proud and humbled to have a small part in that with Paid Stories. I feel like @wattpad is the future of publishing.
It also brings me immense joy. It makes me feel alive to post my work there, much like when I’m reporting. It's a supportive and warm community. So that’s why I’m taking my books there.
At this point in my author career, being read by a fraction of the enthusiastic and vocal 80-million plus monthly users of @wattpad gives me far more satisfaction than publishing on Amazon.
@cathyheller said in her podcast: “What does success look like? How do I define success? Not just how much money I want. How do I want to spend my time?”

My answer from here on in is: I want to spend my time seeking joy. I hope you join me in that pursuit.
