For the record, I think the BBC’s apparent constant covering up for Boris isn’t so much a case of political bias as professional embrassment blended with denial.

I’m reminded of how for the first year or so of Trump’s presidency even the “neutral” American media seemed horribly reluctant to address the sheer viciousness and stupidity of both the man and his administration.
They would fall over themselves to normalise, excuse and minimise his every outburst and outrage. It’s only really in the last few months that anyone other than the obviously liberal pundits have been honest about just HOW bad a president - and person - he GLARINGLY OBVIOUSLY is.
I don’t know if this was an effort to prop up and perpetuate Trump so much as it was a case of the media and political establishments desperately trying to convince THEMSELVES that This Isn’t So Bad, we’ve seen worse, etc because to do OTHERWISE…
… to confront the sheer horror of the corruption and just plain nastiness that has taken hold of the White House would require them to admit that THEY’D LET IT HAPPEN. That somehow, a genuinely evil and stupid person had managed to get past the whole political/media complex…
… and take control.
I think we’re seeing the same thing with Johnson and the UK news media, in particular the BBC. It’s the reluctance to confront the fact that someone UTTERLY unfit for high office has nonetheless slithered into Number 10 ON THEIR WATCH.

That’s why Peter Oborne’s comment that BBC News have decided not to pick up on Johnson’s incessant lies “for fear of undermining the public’s faith in the British political process” rang so true. It’s not about bias so much as it is refusal to accept that the system has failed.
TL/DR: the BBC aren’t covering Boris’s ass when they tweak the news in his favour; they’re covering their OWN ass.
