The holiday aka spooky szn, kicks off tonight with St. Andrew's Night in Romania—a time when the dead, wolves with supernatural abilities, and Vampires roam the earth 💀🐺🦇
St. Andrew was the patron saint of wolves. On St. Andrew’s night it is believed that wolves gain the ability speak, but anyone who hears them will soon die. The wolves morph into SUPERWOLVES and it is said no prey can escape them this night.
In order to protect themselves, people prepare wax crosses and stick them on the right horn of the cows. No one is allowed to comb their hair, or to pronounce the word “lup” (wolf in Romanian), as these might attract the wolves.
With the veil now thin, the are dead also cross through to the land of the living. It’s said they spend their time causing general chaos, dancing, haunting abandoned homes, and generally annoying both the living and animals. But the ones to fear most are the vampires...
These vampires aren’t so much into drinking blood as they are casting spells in order to steal the beauty of others, or the milk of cows, and tormenting their living relatives if these relatives wronged them in life.
People took measures to protect themselves from vampire attacks by rubbing garlic on livestock, doors & windows, & even designating a ‘Guardian of the Garlic’ —a woman who would guard and distribute cloves believed to have magic & healing properties.
