So let’s say you unbridle the burden of everyone paying for college. Neat! I’m for it.

Now...where will they all go to school? I assume the whole point was to expand access to everyone. Are there magical schools out there that I’m unaware of running at 20% capacity? /1
Answer: no.

So now you have all these students applying to schools. Great! Who do they take? Who is the most prepared for school (by-and-large)? Could it be those coming from the best schools? Studies show that Early Childhood Education is a silver bullet. /2
So is small classroom size. So is a well-paid, engaged teaching staff. Who tends to have all these things?

Poor, marginalized communities? Or more affluent suburbs?

Which group are colleges more likely to draw from (for the highly coveted spots they do have) /3
So now you have poor(er) kids paying taxes and not getting into these schools for other reasons, thus shifting the cost regressively
