Weird that we commemorate the birth of a political revolutionary who threw moneychangers out of the temple by buying a bunch of stuff. I don’t think I’ll ever get over that.
I wish Paul Verhoeven would get to make the Jesus movie he’s been thinking about for decades. The thesis is that he was a political revolutionary who didn’t have any supernatural powers — that was a myth that grew up after his death, and all of the “miracles“ are explicable.
For instance, Verhoeven‘s explanation of the miracle of the loaves and fishes is that Jesus was preaching on the edge of the sea, the wind carried his voice, drew a crowd that brought wine, and inspired fisherman to bring fish in from the water.
The opening shot is a nail being pounded into someone’s hand. The camera pulls back to reveal a man we think is Jesus. Then it pulls back to reveal to more crucified men on either side. Then it pulls back and we see dozens more crucified people. Jesus hasn’t been introduced yet.
