I used to lecture on Black Friday that we don& #39;t need to buy things, but thanks to Twitter I learned many people (especially disabled folks) wait for today to afford essentials they can& #39;t get at full price. And now I direct my lecture at society for putting them in that position.
Yes consumerism is bad. Yes our culture of consumption is an issue. But we also don& #39;t need to shame people for making financial decisions about when they shop. If you don& #39;t need to buy something that& #39;s a lesson for every day, not just today. And if someone does need to, let them.
Twitter is awful for so many reasons but I& #39;m forever grateful for how it exposes me to soooooo many marginalized voices that I can listen to, learn from, and educate myself on how to be a better fellow human.
