I used to lecture on Black Friday that we don't need to buy things, but thanks to Twitter I learned many people (especially disabled folks) wait for today to afford essentials they can't get at full price. And now I direct my lecture at society for putting them in that position.
Yes consumerism is bad. Yes our culture of consumption is an issue. But we also don't need to shame people for making financial decisions about when they shop. If you don't need to buy something that's a lesson for every day, not just today. And if someone does need to, let them.
Twitter is awful for so many reasons but I'm forever grateful for how it exposes me to soooooo many marginalized voices that I can listen to, learn from, and educate myself on how to be a better fellow human.
