DAY 5 budget debate on now. #yyccc beginning now with amendment to budget to return some funding to low-income transit pass.
Just kidding. Council has tabled transit pass. The arena debate begins now. #yyycc
We should and will be accountable for the decisions we make, says Coun. Evan Woolley. "Resources are scarcer than they've ever been." #yyccc #yyc
Woolley says he's at a "total loss" for how some councillors could support funding an arena while also voting to cut social services.
Coun. Jeromy Farkas says there should be "no sacred cows", including the arena-- but says he and Woolley part ways on what to do with the funding, particularly on the Green Line. Farkas says he would prefer cash to go to tax relief. #yyccc
Farkas says city is four months down the road and "there is still no signed document" with the Flames, so why did decision have to be "rammed through" in July? #yyccc
Coun. Keating says it would be "extremely easy" for him now to take from arena to restore Green Line funding. Keating said the Green Line "must live within its financial mandate" and that he cannot support "cancelling one project to prop up another." #yyccc #yyc
Coun. Carra references his past comment on the arena. He says the economy has changed and previously the arena was not part of "city shaping" project like the cultural and entertainment district. https://twitter.com/peterloliver/status/1200225528440999937
Carra says if it was a matter of choosing one project, he would choose Green Line over the arena.
But says it is only "opponents of the city" who wish to make it either/or.
Coun. Chahal says he voted against the arena because he didn't like the "inadequate" timing for due diligence. He says there weren't good land valuations made available to council/public ahead of that decision on the deal.
Says he will support Woolley's reconsideration. #yyccc
"Our values aren't in our policy, they're in our budgets," says Coun. Farrell. Says it'll be interesting to see how the arena vote compares to yesterday's vote on social services.
"Who do we care for? And who do we listen to?" #yyccc
Coun. Gondek takes issue with Farrell's comment. Says the decisions on FCSS funding and arena are separate matters. Calls today's debate "public drama."
Woolley says there "seems to be a certain acceptance" that the Green Line vision doesn't matter anymore.
"What I struggle with immensely is why this project (arena) is so untouchable when everything else is supposed to be on the table." #yyccc
The arena reconsideration FAILS 4-11

Farkas is suggesting quite a provocative motion arising.

He would like city to publish vote result on arena reconsideration prominently on the website, alert-style on http://Calgary.ca

Nenshi rules it out of order.

It's getting chippy in here. #yyccc #yyc
