Many of our union’s members will be promoting deals on Black Friday and throughout the holiday season, and many of those deals will come from Amazon—it’s a retailer that the vast majority of our readers depend on, especially when they’re trying to save money, time, or effort.
That being said, Amazon’s warehouse workers have frequently drawn attention to the way the company treats them. Everyone, no matter where they work or what they do, deserves a humane, sustainable, and fair workplace.
While workers aren’t calling for a boycott and neither are we, we want to raise awareness about Amazon workers’ critiques as a show of solidarity.
This year, Amazon warehouse workers in the company’s Staten Island warehouse signed a petition and staged a protest calling for longer break times, more reliable transit, and safer working conditions: https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/11/27/20985691/amazon-workers-black-friday-2019
In Germany, workers have gone on strike for higher pay: https://apnews.com/a4143826834346c196514bb3b025dc80
Earlier this year, Amazon warehouse workers in Shakopee, Minnesota organized a strike to protest “dangerous productivity quotas and a refusal to convert more temporary workers into employees.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/07/08/amazon-workers-plan-strike-during-prime-day-sale-over-working-conditions/
We formed our union to protect our rights as workers—our rights to a good work-life balance, fair pay, and a seat at the table where business decisions are made. We believe Amazon’s workers deserve the same rights.
