I wanna take a hot second to talk about freelancing and pricing yourself because I've seen so many people saying "gimr's paying a fair amount why are you complaining" and I realize that....a lot of non-artists probably haven't had to think about this before. /1
$10/video might seems like it's an okay price because, hey, these videos are 10 minutes long right? So that equates to $60/hour? Except not really /2
I'm going to assume that translating subs for a video probably isn't equal to the time of the vid. So let's say a 10min vid takes you 30min to translate. Now you're down to $20/hour. If it takes you an hour, you've made $10/hour, slightly above US minimum wage. /3
Any longer than an hour, and you're working for min wage or less. Translating is a highly specialized skill! You can speak two languages fluently! Not everyone can do that, and you've probably spent a lot of time working on that skill. Is your time worth min wage for this? /4
Not to mention the fact that this is a super specific kind of language! Not only do you have to understand 2 languages, you have to understand very specific terms related to smash and be able to convey those in a second language. /5
One of my biggest issues with this was also the fluctuation in time for each video! If Gimr is really only paying $10 per vid, no matter the length, some of his videos are 6min long, while others are 30-40min. ???? I really hope that's not the case. /6
So for everyone trying to say that $10 for translation work is a "fair price" and they don't understand why people are complaining, I hope this illuminates the situation if you hadn't thought of some of this. /7
Pls gamers I'm begging u if a notable community member starts asking for cheap labor, make sure you're taking your time and skills into account b4 agreeing, b/c just like in the art world, people who offer specialized skills for cheap can really dmg the market. Thanks love u /8
