I always love AAR. It's a wonderful community, and I learn so much from everyone else’s brilliance.

I always hate AAR. Every single year, I witness or hear testimony to the harassment of younger scholars by their seniors. From casual sexism to overt creepiness to exploitation of authority, theologians seem to do it all.

There’s so much beauty and so much wickedness in the theological academy, it’s disorientating. The seams of sin run deep.

It's time that we talk openly about this problem. We need to talk about how predatory figures in the academy are undermining the brilliance of upcoming scholars. We need to talk about how such exploitation is not just a cishet issue.

We need to talk about how, for many, the highs of AAR/SBL are curtailed if not outright spoiled by encounters with creeps.

If you've never seen this side of AAR, consider yourself blessed, or blind. I've seen it year after year after year.

Forgive me for being earnest on twitter, but I'm tired of seeing my friends pretend not to cry when this happens to them.
