#Thread on RAPE.

A serious discussion is necessary for this, as just plain sloganeering won't help.

I observed a few things, and I thought I should talk on this.
1) Stop using the victim's identity on Twitter and other social media!

This is the reason why I will not use those hashtags containing the victim's name, which are being used by others. Instead I'll use #JusticeForOurWomen.

I will also not use the victim's picture here.
Doing so is punishable under Sec. 228A of the Indian Penal Code ( https://indiankanoon.org/doc/1696350/ ).

It also puts the victim's family at increased security risk.

Hence I'll also undo my RTs which had the hashtags and the photographs.
2) Demand for a judicial enquiry into the laxity of the police.

According to news shared by @Sagar4BJP , when the family of Priyanka Reddy complained to police this was the bizzare response from Police - "She might eloped with someone if we see her we will inform you"
I am posting only the audio of the video shared by @Sagar4BJP, as in that video her family members were shown.

@TelanganaDGP should look into this immediately, and also we should also look into this issue of assumptions by the police.
The police avoid instant action in such cases because of them being counter-demonised by our urban youth as "moral police" if it turns out to be a love affair between a couple.

Same scenario was presented in the movie "Section 375".
I feel we should put some legalities that will ensure that rape cases and cases of sexual harassment be responded to instantly by the police.

Also, we should ask the government to increase the numerical strength as well as other resources of our police.
A stronger police ensures a better law-abiding society. Remember that.
3) Stop victim shaming!

Another video was doing the rounds, which contained the voice recording of the last phone call of the victim with her sister.
Again uploading audio only, as the video contained the victim's photograph. http://chirb.it/bsIpkI
On this, the Telangana Home Minister said that its the woman's fault that she didn't call 100 first.

Who does anyone call first when in threat? FAMILY!

4) Change the punishment for rape.

Legally, the punishment for rape is rigorous imprisonment for minimum seven years, extending to life, according to Sec. 376 IPC.
https://indiankanoon.org/doc/1279834/
I feel this is inadequate. For the simple reason that imprisonment only acts as a deterrent for people who highly value their image in the society. @SkandaVeera talked about it very well. https://twitter.com/SkandaVeera/status/1200407067422408706?s=09
5) Self-defence measures.

I saw an old video of @fayedsouza where she explained that pepper spray and blades less than 5 inches are legalised by the government for self-defense.

Women, please use these 🙏🏻
And please stop fearing everything and everyone. 🙏🏻

I know how much afraid you are, seeing all these cases unfold.

Be bold. If you put yourself as a fearless woman, many such rapists get intimidated.

Fight back. Do not step back.
6) The final one - An appeal. 🙏🏻

I know many people have started giving a religious colour to #HyderabadHorror, and I understand it's their reaction to how the media gave the #KathuaCase a religious colour and shamed the whole Hindu community.

Please be above them morally 🙏🏻
Just because they did it to us doesn't mean we have to do it too.

I know some of you may be angry at me because of this, but I don't want to stoop down in the #HyderabadHorror case and give it a religious colour. Please understand this 🙏🏻.
