Saw a tweet complaining about apples left on trees in an orchard because they were not a desirable size for the supermarket and that is what is wrong with the world.

Those apples cost money to pick and labor is expensive and often in short demand...
...gleaning requires letting people on farm which could raise liability issues. Someone needs to oversee the gleaners. Trees could be damaged which is a burden on growers in future years...
...it’s not as simple as saying “pick those apples and give them away or let someone else pick them and take them.” Before we rush to judgement and decry all growers as being wasteful or stingy. My $0.02. Possibly unpopular.
Not saying we don’t need to reduce waste at all levels in the production system. But putting the majority of the responsibility on growers without thought to their constraints is not useful.
