1/ Why moving abroad will get you ahead.

I want to give you a new way to think about work and the value of your labour...

FRIDAY THREAD.
2/ After two and a half fantastic years, I’m moving home from Moscow this weekend.

Here’s why I moved abroad, why it was a fantastic decision and why you or your kids should do it too.
3/ An education from a Western University puts you in the top, “best-educated” bracket of people worldwide.

You don’t realise this because where you’re from it’s normal to have a degree.
4/ When something is abundant it’s price is low.

The supply of highly educated people is so high in the West that their labour is cheap.

This isn’t true elsewhere.
5/ Having a University education AND being willing to move abroad puts you in a very small group.

A group which commands a high price for its labour.
6/ This is called geographical arbitrage.

You’re moving the same thing - your labour - from one place to another and selling it for a much higher price.
7/ Teaching English is the most obvious example and is what most people do.

In most places English teachers command a higher salary than they would at home AND they get their housing and bills paid for by their employer.
8/ I know people who’ve done this in Dubai, China, Russia, South Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Thailand and Khazakhstan.

In most places, the cost of living is lower than the West so it’s much easier to save money while living well.
9/ This is to say nothing of the personal benefits:

Great friends, a new culture, opportunities to travel, and broadening your minds horizons by getting out of your echo chamber.
10/ Plenty of people I know have used teaching as a platform to get abroad before switching to something else after a year or so.

Personally I’ve done private tutoring, content writing and freelance market research.
10/ If you or someone you know is struggling to save for their first bitcoin (or house, whatever nerd),

Consider moving abroad for a year or two.
